Academic Coach - Teacher Certification Pathways (TCP)

The University of Texas Permian Basin welcomes applications for the position of Academic Coach with our Teacher Certification Pathways (TCP) Program

Salary Range

$50,000.00 depending on qualifications

Essential Functions

 

The Academic Coach, Teacher Certification Pathways (TCP) supports the academic success, engagement, persistence, and completion of undergraduate and post-baccalaureate teacher candidates by providing individualized student-success coaching, proactive outreach, progress monitoring, structured intervention, resource navigation, and academic-success programming. Working with faculty, academic advisors, certification personnel, the Educator Preparation Program, and student-support offices, the position helps students develop effective learning, time-management, self-advocacy, accountability, and professional-readiness strategies; maintains accurate coaching and grant records; uses student data to identify barriers and recommend service improvements; and coordinates appropriate referrals and follow-up. Formal academic advising decisions, certification determinations, clinical counseling, personnel decisions, program policy, and budget authority remain with designated University officials.
Individual Academic Success Coaching and Goal Development
1. Provide individualized academic success coaching to Teacher Certification Pathways students through in-person, virtual, and group coaching sessions.
2. Guide students in developing practical academic-success strategies, including goal setting, time management, organization, study skills, test preparation, self-regulation, accountability, and self-advocacy.
3. Build structured coaching relationships that support student confidence, motivation, persistence, academic engagement, and progress toward educational and professional goals.
4. Conduct proactive outreach and scheduled follow-up to assess student progress, reinforce action plans, and address emerging barriers to success.
Progress Monitoring, Intervention, and Resource Navigation
5. Monitor student participation, academic performance, engagement, and progress toward established goals using available student-success and institutional data.
6. Identify students experiencing academic, personal, financial, or transitional challenges; coordinate timely interventions within assigned authority; and connect students with appropriate University or community resources.
7. Support onboarding, orientation, transition, persistence, and re-engagement activities for new, transfer, and continuing Teacher Certification Pathways students.
8. Collaborate with academic advisors, faculty, certification personnel, and student-services staff to coordinate student-support strategies while academic advising and certification decisions remain with designated authorities.
Workshops, Data, Records, and Grant Support
9. Develop and facilitate workshops, coaching sessions, and learning opportunities focused on academic success, professional skills, educator readiness, student engagement, and effective use of University resources.
10. Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential coaching records, student contacts, progress notes, intervention documentation, and referral outcomes in designated institutional systems.
11. Identify recurring trends and barriers affecting student achievement and recommend coaching, communication, referral, or service-delivery improvements to program leadership.
12. Document grant-funded coaching activities, collect required data, maintain supporting records, and contribute to program and sponsor reporting requirements.
Program Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
13. Promote awareness and appropriate use of tutoring, financial aid, accessibility services, counseling, career services, wellness resources, and other student-support programs.
14. Support program assessment, continuous-improvement activities, special projects, and student-success initiatives within the College of Education.
15. Participate in departmental meetings, professional development, training opportunities, and University committees as assigned.
16. Maintain FERPA compliance and protect confidential student information and records.

Required Qualifications

 
1. Bachelor's degree in education, social/behavioral science, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

2. Two (2) years of professional experience supporting student success, academic coaching, mentoring, advising, case management,
counseling support, retention initiatives, or related student-facing services in an educational setting.
3. Demonstrated initiative with the ability to take ownership of projects and have exceptional follow-through.
4. Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, students, school leaders, site coordinators, student mentors and the public.
5. Demonstrated commitment to a diverse, nontraditional, first-generation student population.
6. Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
7. Effective written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
8. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

 
1. Bilingual (Fluent in Spanish, both written and oral).
2. Knowledge of Texas educator preparation requirements, teacher certification processes, clinical teaching requirements, and Texas Education
Agency (TEA) regulations.
3. Experience coaching, mentoring, supporting, or advising first-generation, nontraditional, adult, or underserved student populations.
4. Knowledge of student success, persistence, retention, and coaching best practices in higher education.
5. Demonstrated evidence of self-motivation and attention to detail.
6. Ability to proactively solve problems.
7. Practice sound judgment, tact, and the ability to multitask under pressure.
8. Experience managing student data and communications using PeopleSoft systems, Slate, and the Canvas Learning Management System.

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 – 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.


Standard Working Conditions

1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
