What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you want to join a dynamic team that modernizes our Nation’s most critical weapon systems to ensure a safe and credible strategic deterrence for America? If so, department 2218 is seeking a self-directed, customer- & partner-focused individual who has strong interpersonal, teaming, leadership, and analytical skills to become the Electrical Lead for the W88 ALT370 AF&F (Arming, Fuzing & Firing) and System.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Resolve technical and programmatic design, development, qualification, and production challenges in a collaborative manner across multiple internal and external agencies.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership in identifying and managing technical risks.
  • Analyze system performance against requirements.
  • Mentor early career electrical engineers.
  • Assess, plan, and report progress relative to a program plan.
  • Work with engineers, technologists, and technicians from multiple Sandia National Labs (SNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Pantex (PX), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) organizations to solve technical challenges.
  • Update design definition and documentation.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related STEM field, plus (1) one year of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus (5) five years of experience; OR equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Experience working on a nuclear weapon system or component organization.
  • Active DOE Q-Level security clearance or equivalent (DOD Top Secret).

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Prior Electrical Lead or team leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated self-motivated effectiveness working in an environment with dynamic conditions, competing priorities, and firm deadlines.
  • A demonstrated ability to integrate, build, and work effectively across technical teams, collaborate with customers and partners to resolve issues, and conduct trade-offs to identify system solutions.
  • An understanding of nuclear weapon design.
  • Experience in test equipment engineering.
  • Experience with data and failure analysis.
  • Experience with the following software/programming languages: MATLAB, LabVIEW TestStand, VB.Net, Verilog.
  • Experience writing Engineering Authorizations.
  • Experience in ND Systems organization(s).
  • Previous work with the Kansas City National Security Campus.
  • Experience with DOD or DOE programs.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal.

About Our Team:

Department 2218 (W88 Alt 370 Prod. Realiz.) provides systems engineering and program integration for the US Navy Strategic Nuclear Weapons. The department is directly responsible for the design, development, qualification, and production support of the Arming, Fuzing, and Firing (AF&F) as well as the W88 Alt 370 Reentry Body (RB). Currently, our focus is centered on production support with our KCNSC and PX partners. We also provide input to the Weapons Stockpile Management organizations as it relates to Annual Assessment and formal anomalies.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
