Facilities Services Division provides quality customer service by maintaining a safe, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing environment in which students, faculty, and staff can function and accomplish their educational objectives and by supporting a patient care culture that continuously improves. Facilities Services' responsibilities include Interior and Exterior Facilities Support, Construction, Space Management, and Environmental Services.

Job Summary

 

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Facilities Operations, the Facilities Plant Manager provides leadership and direction to Operations staff assigned to the Plant Operations Zone serving the Health Sciences, Summerville, and Forest Hills campuses. This position is essential to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Augusta University¿s central energy plants and utility infrastructure supporting academic, research, administrative, and healthcare operations.

The Manager oversees daily operations and maintenance of critical systems, including chilled water, heating systems, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressed air, and related equipment. Responsibilities include leading plant personnel; managing preventive and corrective maintenance; establishing operational procedures; coordinating emergency response, regulatory requirements, contractors, and utility projects; and ensuring continuity of operations.

The position leads skilled trade personnel, oversees work orders and preventive maintenance, responds to critical equipment failures and outages, and ensures facilities remain at peak operational readiness. The Manager also identifies opportunities to improve reliability, energy efficiency, sustainability, and operational performance while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Responsibilities

 

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Leadership

Provides leadership and direction to approximately 12 skilled trades staff, ensuring safe work practices, clear assignments, and effective completion of corrective and preventive maintenance across AU Health Sciences, Summerville, and Forest Hills campuses. Supervises multi-trade technicians and contractors; assigns work to meet organizational goals, deadlines, and the AU mission. Manages recruitment, interviews, performance evaluations, and employee relations. Oversees Plant Operations work involving building infrastructure and ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Communicates with AU staff and stakeholders to assess facility needs and ensure timely, quality service, including after-hours emergency response. Develops and leads maintenance improvement initiatives. Monitors operating budgets and identifies cost-effective approaches to completing work and procuring materials, tools, and services. Collects, analyzes, and disseminates operational data and performance metrics to support managerial decisions, establish benchmarks, and improve efficiency and effectiveness. Participates in university committees and meetings with Plant Operations units as needed.

Maintenance Management 

Maximizes use of the CMMS and develops procedures for work order data collection, tracking, and reporting.

Develops and implements quality control processes to measure work quality, productivity, and efficiency; reports results to leadership.

Trains staff on CMMS use and work order management.

Reviews proposed designs for new construction and renovation projects in collaboration with Facilities Planning, Design & Construction.

Ensures accurate and timely CMMS data for reporting; investigates stakeholder concerns, tracks work status, analyzes data, and prepares reports and recommendations.

Coordinates activities and communications among Operations Zones, Facilities departments, contractors, vendors, and stakeholders to resolve issues and maximize efficiency.

Develops and maintains training materials, procedures, and operating instructions for safe and quality work.

Directs facility response to inclement weather events and resulting damage.

Provides oversight of contractors and vendors supporting maintenance operations.

Monitors labor and material costs and manages inventories of parts, tools, and equipment to maintain efficient operations.

Communications

Provides professional, accurate, tactful, and timely written and verbal communication to Facilities and university staff.

Establishes and maintains positive, respectful, and collaborative working relationships with employees at all levels of Augusta University.

Develops and leads group presentations, meetings, workgroups, and committees as assigned.

Performs Related Work as Required

Works overtime as needed, including during emergencies and critical facility situations.

Performs all duties in accordance with OSHA standards and Augusta University safety requirements.

Maintains good housekeeping and safe work conditions in job sites, shops, and warehouses.

Performs other duties and assignments as directed by Augusta University leadership.

Required Qualifications

 

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university. Five (5) years of experience in a maintenance organization with two (2) years in a supervisory role. Valid Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with Eight (8) years of experience in a maintenance organization with four (4) years in a supervisory role.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

 

ABILITIES

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, and technical documents.

Ability to apply knowledge of energy plant operations, building HVAC systems, electrical systems, and related design principles. Ability to understand and apply compliance requirements as they relate to an academic campus environment.

Ability to track, analyze, and utilize data and performance metrics to support informed decision making.

Ability to think strategically, identify opportunities for improvement, and stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.

Ability to proactively identify challenges, propose effective solutions, and take action to support safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of institutional facilities management and operations, including program management, design, construction, energy conservation, USG methods, and campus infrastructure.

Knowledge of university campus facilities operations, systems, and practices.

SKILLS

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software and database applications.

Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and discretion when handling confidential information.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

 

Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

Pay Band: 14

Salary Minimum: $75,300.00/Annually 

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
