College/Department Information
The Division of Sponsored Programs Administration and the Augusta University Research Institute serve as a central unit to coordinate and support Augusta University's Internal and External Sponsored Projects.
The Division aims to identify, support, and advance opportunities for research, training, teaching, and scholarly activities by managing the entire lifecycle of sponsored projects from proposal and grant development and submission to contract preparation, award management, and project close out management. The DSPA seeks to advance extramural support programs for the institution by providing administrative, informational, and logistical assistance to faculty and staff, while ensuring compliance with pertinent policies and regulations of the institution, extramural sponsors, and federal oversight agencies.
Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Pre-award Services will have primary responsibility for facilitating a small portfolio of complex grants (federal and nonfederal), and federal cooperative agreements. Serves as the direct supervisor of Grant and Contract and Senior Grant and Contract officers. The position has a role in ensuring proper pre-award review of sponsored research activity (to include NIH/DHHS) and in verifying regulatory compliance, consistency in comprehensive policies in the areas of human and animal subject use, conflict of interest, research integrity and provides assistance in all pre-award phases of grants.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
Facilitate complex grants
Assist principal investigators, project managers, faculty members, and departmental staff personnel in providing oversight and expert advice on the review and submission of proposals and authorizing the submissions when they are accurate and compliant with Institutional and sponsor guidelines. This includes reviewing proposal budgets for accuracy and consistency with each sponsors requirements as well as ensuring Institutional fiscal and administrative obligations are met. Review and negotiation of sponsored awards prior to acceptance, authorizing the establishment of sponsored accounts when Institutional compliance approvals have been met, budget reviews are complete, grant terms are acceptable, and institutional commitments are authorized.
Review NIH weekly announcements
Determine relevant information to disseminate to the research community via the web and other forms of communication.
Data Clean for System Reporting
Assist the Director with data cleanup.
Professional Development
Seek professional development opportunities for self and the pre-award team; remain current on grant writing and research administration issues; develop and maintain a grant development handbook; coordinate and monitor the account set-up process for pre-award which includes being responsible for monitoring turnaround time, generating recommendations for processing improvements where necessary, and updating account establishment checklists.
Training
Assist the Director in developing pre-award training programs for the sponsored program community and Pre-Award staff. Work collaboratively with the Director and pre-award staff to ensure the training is relevant to sponsored program issues/concerns and is continually offered and conducted at times most beneficial to the sponsored program community. Trains newly hired Grant and Contract officers.
Other Duties
Participate in special projects assigned by the Director and Associate Vice President for Sponsored Programs Administration as requested. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of five years of relevant experience.
OR
Advanced degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Experience
Six years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Extensive experience in preparation/review of biomedical research proposals. Deep familiarity and mastery of issues related to sponsored program management including close-out, transfer, and the interpretation and implementation of federal regulations.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to manage complex, diverse responsibilities in a time sensitive/constrained environment with poise, tact, and a customer-oriented focus.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary Range: $82,800-$91,750 annually.
Pay Band: B15
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
