Job Summary
The Assistant Vice President for Foundations & Chief Financial Officer for Foundations is responsible for the operational and administrative support activities of the Augusta University Foundation, the Augusta University Real Estate Foundation, and the Augusta University Real Estate Corporation. The AVP/CFO manages the daily operations and financial management of the Foundations and the internal support of the Development function for AU. The AVP/CFO provides the leadership, management and oversight necessary to ensure that the Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement office and the Foundations have the appropriate strategies, operational controls, reporting procedures and infrastructure in place to support the prospect research, gift processing, development, donor stewardship and recognition, stakeholder relations and database needs while maintaining excellence and ensuring financial strength and operating efficiency.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Oversee, direct and manage the administrative and supporting services for the Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement office and Foundations including budget, financial services and support information technology infrastructure management for financial systems.
In collaboration with the Senior Director of Information and Data Services, monitor, and report on measurable objectives for specific development and constituent engagement initiatives including: annual giving, major and planned giving and alumni affairs.
Oversee the finance staff to ensure proper fiscal management, financial reporting, and maintenance of all accounting systems and functions. Remain up to date and ensure compliance with nonprofit financial and audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
Develop and administer all policies and procedures for the operations of the Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement office and Foundations. Interprets applicable policies and procedures and ensures compliance and approves any necessary exceptions. Monitor the effectiveness of operations and support services and initiate policy and procedure revisions in cooperation with the VP for Foundations & CEO of the Foundations and the VP for Development.
Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of Philanthropy & Alumni and Foundations management and financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders including AU leadership, federal and state funders, foundations, and the Foundations' board.
Serve as strategic partner for VP for Foundations & CEO of the Foundations, in implementing and monitoring strategies, plans, and budgets. Serves as a representative on various boards, councils, committees or task forces to coordinate institutional activities and facilitate Development and Foundations goals and initiatives. Makes presentations as requested. Support and manage special projects for the VP for Foundations & CEO of the Foundations.
Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures and oversee cash, investment and asset management and associated cash flow planning to ensure availability of funds as needed. Oversee investment and financial strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships.
Coordinate the development of the budget for the Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement office through the Augusta University Foundation with the VP for Foundations & CEO of the Foundations, other VPs, AVPs and directors of development and support and monitor its management through the applicable processes and procedures.
Engage the Foundations' board to develop short-, medium-, long-term plans and projections and represent the foundation to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with seven years minimum financial management experience, preferably in a philanthropic setting, or equivalent experience resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial and operational management strategies.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree, CPA preferred
Ten or more years financial management experience, preferably in a philanthropic setting, or equivalent experience resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial and operational management strategies.
Enthusiasm for working in a developing organization where changes are frequent, structure is evolving, and flexibility and teamwork are necessary. Ability to motivate others and design activities to assist others in meeting organizational goals. Experience with using and overseeing the management of fundraising database management systems. Experience in the management of a non-profit foundation affiliated with a public college or university. Strong desire to use and encourage creative thinking to appropriately challenge current practices. Personal characteristics associated with successful professionals, including a vigorous work ethic, sound judgment, impeccable integrity, demonstrated initiative, appropriate professional appearance, attitude and personality to work effectively with colleagues and senior leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
The AVP/CFO will be a talented leader with a strong background in non-profit finance and philanthropy coupled with a keen interest in and appreciation for the values and mission of AU and AUHealth. S/he will have at least five years of broad finance and business operations experience, ideally beginning in non-profit audit and/or accounting followed by experience gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. S/he will ideally have experience managing a team of staff in non-profit operations and financial management (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources including government (federal and state) contracts and an affiliate structure with various program areas delivered nationally.
Knowledge of non-profit tax laws and best practices. Well-developed quantitative skills for budget management, goal setting and program evaluation. Ability to select, train, supervise, inspire and lead a professional team. Strong capabilities in planning, organizing and managing work, including ability to manage multiple tasks and relationships. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
