Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology
The University of Louisville School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology. The School seeks a Chair to lead the clinical, scientific and educational programs of the Department of Neurology, with an emphasis on expanding the excellence, diversity, and collaboration within the School and with our partners. The Chair is responsible for overseeing strategy, finance, and operations of the Department. The Chair will provide Academic and Clinical leadership in the development of clinical centers of excellence, and inspire and guide groundbreaking clinical, translational and basic research. The Chair of the Department of Neurology will be responsible for the planning and guidance of clinical neurology efforts within the UofL Health system.
UofL Health is a fully integrated regional academic health system with five hospitals, four outpatient medical centers, and nearly 200 physician practice locations. It is the third largest healthcare provider in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is focused on delivering outstanding clinical care, providing cutting edge clinical research, and offering a supportive educational environment to our learners. UofL is a unique Neuroscience community boasting the internationally recognized Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center, a Neurosurgery Department Ranked in the top 20 for NIH funding, and a highly regarded Department of Neurobiology. These efforts have been aligned in the recently created UofL Health Brain and Spine Institute.
The Department of Neurology is comprised of 14 full-time faculty, 1 part-time faculty, 22 housestaff (increasing to 24 in July 2025) and 1 fellow with 2 Endowed Chairs. Faculty provide inpatient neurological care at University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Mary and Elizabeth Hospital and tele-stroke care at UofL South Hospital, UofL Health Shelbyville Hospital and Taylor Regional Medical Center. University of Louisville Hospital is home to the first Comprehensive Stroke Center in Kentucky, with Jewish Hospital and Mary and Elizabeth Hospital designated as Primary Stroke Centers. Jewish Hospital also houses a level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.
The Department has three outpatient clinic locations: Chestnut Street Outpatient Center, Frazier Rehab and Medical Center Northeast. Our outpatient practice holds multiple Centers of Excellence designations, including ALS, MDA and Huntington’s Disease. Faculty members are active in clinical trials and work collaboratively with other departments across the School of Medicine on research endeavors, with a desire among faculty to increase grant funding. The Department attracts a diverse complement of residents and emphasizes clinical excellence, research innovation, and an inviting inclusive work environment.
Candidates will have an M.D. or M.D/Ph.D. degree, and a record of clinical leadership, educational excellence, research discovery, and scholarship which would merit appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure. Chair Candidates will be board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Candidates should have a proven record of financial and operational leadership, relationship management, strong teaching, clinical, mentoring and research advancement. They shall have demonstrated administrative experience, academic leadership, and the ability to engender intellectual diversity and cultural richness. Candidates should be committed to patient care, research discovery, faculty development, and the education of medical students, residents and fellows.
