Job Function:

Perform duties of Senior Broadcast Engineer and ensure broadcast media equipment is properly maintained to minimize downtime.

Minimum Education:

Associate’s degree in electronics or related area or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:

Over three through five years of related experience; strong computer skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering support for remote media productions and presentations, including teleconferences, sporting events, satellite uplinks, and downlinks, and streaming to multiple platforms. perform duties as a remote truck engineer; set up and operate University Remote Production Truck; assist operators and clients with the operation of remote equipment; upgrade and maintain equipment in remote production vehicle.
  • Provide engineering support for microwave links, satellite uplinks, and downlinks, fiber optics systems including SMPTE, single-mode and multi-mode fiber, and networking equipment. Knowledge and expertise in the use of networking and streaming hardware and software.
  • Install, maintain, and repair broadcast equipment for University Media Services; includes WIPB, WBST, WCRD, WCRH, and other university departments.
  • Install, configure, and maintain campus digital signage systems players, and monitors. Work with departments and facilities for proper installation and operation.
  • Lead, design, implement, and maintain broadcast control rooms, video news media labs, and recording studio audio suites. Work as system administrator for rack rooms in each area. On-call for equipment maintenance and functionality during high-traffic times.

  • Use complex software and hardware systems, including Networking setup and configuration, Windows, AutoCAD, Filewave, Microsoft Office Suite, Presentations, scheduling programs, interfacing practices, programming, robotic systems, 3d Printers, PC, MAC, Linux system platforms.
  • Work directly with faculty, staff, and administrators to ascertain needs for new and renovated teaching facilities, document the requirements and suggestions, provide product and vendor recommendations, budget consultation, project management, provide as-built documentation, and coordinate with vendors for ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and technical support.
  • Set up, check, operate, and monitor equipment for studio and remote productions; includes equipment for distance learning programs as well as academic and promotional productions.

  • Work in interdepartmental teams on production work, engineering work, quality control, work evaluations of members, scheduling, and solving problems and commercial broadcast productions.
  • Apply thorough knowledge to the use of complex electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, computerized signal generators, voltmeters, waveform monitors, fiber test equipment, and knowledge of the safe operation and use of other specialized test equipment.
  • Monitor procedures and ensure quality of work, document standard operating procedures, and oversee the continuous update of systems as necessary.
  • Perform component-level repair of media-related equipment for Ball State University’s campus, including electrical and soldering requirements. Must be able to read and interpret diagrams.
  • Provide engineering support for the university cable system by maintaining and repairing MATV system and equipment.
  • Direct interaction with students during the broadcast of sporting events, studio shoots, and other remote broadcast and streaming events. Includes continual training, supervising, and instruction of students in the proper use of broadcast equipment and game day operations. Provide knowledge and training to practicum students in one-on-one sessions throughout the semester as needed by the Department of Media.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
