Reporting to the Sr. Director, Education Technology, the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning Technology is responsible for leading and adapting support strategies and operational excellence for online, hybrid, and traditional classroom instruction for Harvard Medical School’s Doctoral, Graduate, and Executive and External Education programs. Managing a team of instructional design, online learning training and support, and specialized hybrid and hyflex teaching professionals, this position will interface with program staff and leadership to ensure technology support and training needs are met by aligning existing and emerging technology available within the school, university, and academic marketplace to the needs of the faculty, staff, and student experience. In conjunction with the Sr. Director, Education Technology, the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning Technology will be responsible for coordinating and conducting needs analysis documentation for various academic programs’ technology opportunities and gaps to help guide and inform the overall technology systems roadmap for Harvard Medical School’s academic mission areas.

Working across the IT organization at Harvard Medical School and the University, this position will be responsible for identifying opportunities, leveraging expertise, and implementing and adapting timely and appropriate outreach, training, and support for the wide array of tools available. Success in this role hinges on a maintaining a focused team of specialized support and training staff, consistent communication with our constituencies, and a strong focus on continual quality improvement of teaching and learning technology tools, services, and student experience for all of Harvard Medical School. This position will manage 8-12 staff, customer relationships, budgets, and the daily operations of teaching and learning support, training, and user experience for Harvard Medical School.

Due to the nature of the varying academic programs at Harvard Medical School, some off-hours work and weekends may be required.
 

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Work with residential, graduate, continuing, and distance education program leadership to establish and maintain relationships for technology opportunities and requirements
  • Assist the Sr. Director, Education Technology in advancing the strategy and mission of Information Technology for the educational mission.
  • Maintain budgets and financial projections for teaching and learning technology used throughout the school
  • Build adoption and shepherd a new generation of software and technology solutions in support of our educational mission
  • Effectively communicate projects’ progress up, down, and horizontally across the organization in conjunction with the IT Project Management Office.
  • Lead and participate in governance committees related to various teaching and learning technology needs and prioritization of technology projects
  • Maintain close relationships through committees and partnerships with central University programs and other Medical Schools
  • Manage and oversee contracts and activities performed by 3rd party vendors or external contractors
  • Consistently deliver timely and effective communications regarding department activities and offerings to the community
  • Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • BA or BS preferred and 7+ years overall experience in education technology systems and processes in an academic setting preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in managing learning management systems, video applications, student assessment and engagement tools, course design & development, and supporting staff
  • Applied knowledge of instructional technology design in a higher-ed setting
  • Previous experience managing a team of technology experts in a service-delivery setting. Demonstrated experience in vendor and 3rd party system integration, administration, and integration.
  • Demonstrated experience motivating staff and faculty in teaching and learning technology adoption
  • Effective communication skills in meeting, formal presentations, and written documents is crucial Proven ability to lead projects and resource them successfully, for project success
  • Advanced degree or coursework in technology or education desired but not essential.
