Department Information

Established in 2007, the Engineering Fundamentals Department is comprised of faculty who teach common core courses taken by all entering engineering students.  In their first four semesters, engineering students take 18 hours of courses from the Department of Engineering Fundamentals, including Engineering Methods, Tools, and Practice I and II and calculus-based Engineering Analysis courses.  Most courses have many sections and multiple instructors who collaborate to work as instructional teams to maintain consistency of learning outcomes across courses and support continuous improvement of teaching and learning in Engineering Fundamentals courses.

The department’s focus on undergraduate teaching is highlighted in The Center for Teaching and Learning Engineering (CTLE).  The CTLE is housed in the department and promotes outstanding STEM teaching and learning through scholarship, research, and professional development.  The CTLE’s research group GEARS, the Guild for Engineering Education, Achievement, Retention and Success, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and professional support for faculty and graduate students. https://engineering.louisville.edu/research/centersinstitutes/ctle/
