What Your Job Will Be Like:
Our team is seeking a highly motivated metallurgy and materials science laboratory support technologist to work on advanced materials characterization, metallurgical analysis, and failure analysis efforts as a part of both R&D and applied-science work in the Metallurgy and Materials Joining organization. This work will include a breadth of activities that could include running experiments on advanced electrical, mechanical, and thermomechanical equipment, relating metallurgical phenomena to testing in support of understanding materials behavior, and completing materials characterization through analyses, among others. Our team is focused strongly on materials for applications in high reliability components, and our research is at the forefront of state-of-the-art materials both traditional in scope and use and those produced through advanced manufacturing methods.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Operate and maintain experimental apparatuses including (but not limited to) mechanical test frames, ovens and furnaces, material joining testers, and novel magnetic property analyzers.
- Operate and maintain small arc-melter to produce custom alloys
- Analyze metal samples and material joints for material characteristics including fracture, wear, strength, microstructural characteristics, and other material properties.
- Use a thermomechanical simulator and digital image correlation (DIC) test equipment and software to acquire and analyze local deformation data.
- Perform optical microscopy and image analysis on a wide range of metallic materials.
- Work closely and collaborate in a team- and customer-focused environment with technologists, staff, and managers both inside and outside your organization
- Complete administrative taskings including, but not limited to, purchasing materials, ordering testing services, working with outside / external laboratories, and completing safety documentation
Due to the nature of the job, the selected candidate must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$74,700 - $144,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Materials Engineering
- Experience working in a laboratory environment. This may include constructing, developing, and using lab equipment and/or setups, as well as maintaining capabilitie
- Experience with materials characterization equipment (e.g. optical microscopes, electron microscopes, magnetic testers
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Experience processing and analyzing data, documenting results, and presenting conclusions
- Experience operating and maintaining vacuum, electronic, and mechanical equipment, along with connected control systems. Metal melting, metal fabrication knowledge or experience is a plus.
- Track record of safely working in a laboratory environment
- Experience with CAD software such as CREO or SolidWorks
- Experience with microscopy and image analysis software, as well as scientific analytical software, along with a familiarity with programming languages including MATLAB, Python, Solidworks, and/or LabVIEW.
- Experience working with outside vendors / laboratories. Positive track record working with customers and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated capability to prioritize and complete work across multiple simultaneous projects
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
- An active DOE Q security clearance or DOD equivalent
About Our Team:
The Metallurgy and Welding Engineering Department is the principal organization for metallurgy research and development throughout Sandia. Our expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process as well as applied physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include laser welding, failure analysis, mechanical testing, physical metallurgy, and others. Our scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. We support an extensive variety of national security programs and we are highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
