About the Department
The Histology Laboratory is one component of the College of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services. This revenue generating unit is responsible for the clinical, teaching and research histopathology needs of the CVM and other NCSU and regional contributors.

Essential Job Duties
The Histology Medical Laboratory Technologist position supports the Histology Laboratory’s diagnostic, teaching, and research services. Techniques performed by the histology lab include both manual and automated histological procedures. The candidate will be expected to independently manage time to stay on task within deadlines and assess their own work for accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:
Routine diagnostic and research veterinary histological procedures and all Laboratory Information System functions.
Diagnostic sample pickups, accessioning, sending out testing, and all associated Lab Information System functions.
Maintenance of all lab instruments, reagents, and lab spaces.
Communications with all laboratory customers and partners.
Training and supervision of DVM student assistants.
Other Responsibilities
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification & Advanced Techniques: ASCP certification (HT or HTL) with experience performing manual and automated Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Special Staining procedures.
Core Histology Expertise: Proficiency in animal anatomy and microanatomy, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and routine H&E staining.
Safety & Technical Systems: Demonstrated knowledge of formaldehyde and chemical safety requirements, alongside experience using Orchard or other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
Professionalism & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collegially among personnel, residents, and pathologists to support laboratory growth.
Operational Precision: Detail-oriented and efficient in managing time and resources, with the physical ability to lift up to 30 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
