Job Description
The University Marketing and Communications Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist will play a critical role in developing, maintaining, and optimizing Ball State University’s web properties to ensure a stable, scalable, and high-performing digital experience for students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. As a member of the Marketing and Communications digital team, this role will provide technical expertise in web development, content management, and digital infrastructure, working closely with the Senior Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist and Information Technology teams to ensure the continued functionality, security, and accessibility of bsu.edu, the University’s WordPress sites, MyBallState, and other digital platforms.
In addition to web maintenance and troubleshooting, this position will support strategic web initiatives, including reducing outdated content, optimizing website performance, and enhancing user experience. The University Marketing and Communications Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist will also assist in the evaluation and potential transition of Ball State’s website content management system (CMS), ensuring the University’s digital assets align with evolving industry best practices and emerging AI and personalization capabilities.
By integrating modern web development practices, responsive design, and accessibility standards, the Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist will support the University’s digital transformation efforts and enhance the long-term sustainability of its web ecosystem.

Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, web development, information technology, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution.
Minimum Experience:
Minimum one year of professional experience in web development, CMS management, or digital maintenance.
Preferred Experience:
Two or more years of experience in web development, CMS migration, or maintaining digital infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a web development and maintenance expert within the Marketing and Communications digital team, ensuring the stability, performance, and functionality of Ball State’s web properties..
- Assist in managing, maintaining, and optimizing Ball State’s content management system (CMS), including Sitecore and WordPress, ensuring seamless operation, security, and best practices.
- Support site performance enhancements by optimizing page load speeds, troubleshooting technical issues, and implementing scalable digital solutions to improve user experience.
- Collaborate closely with the University Senior Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist, IT, and Unified Technology Support to ensure continuity, security, and long-term stability of the University’s digital ecosystem.
- Evaluate current CMS infrastructure, assisting in research and implementation of a potential CMS migration, ensuring the University transitions to a cost-effective, efficient, and scalable digital platform.
- Oversee the management and maintenance of 95+ WordPress sites, ensuring proper updates, security patches, and integration with University systems.
- Collaborate with content creators, digital strategists, and designers to develop and implement modern web components, widgets, and templates that enhance engagement and usability.
- Support reducing and streamlining website content, assisting in the removal of outdated materials and optimizing key University pages for better performance.
- Work alongside the University SEO & AI Specialist to ensure technical SEO best practices are followed, supporting structured data implementation, site indexing, and mobile responsiveness.
- Stay updated on advancements in AI-driven web development, including AI-powered personalization, content recommendations, and automated optimizations, making proactive recommendations for strategic implementation.
- Ensure compliance with web accessibility guidelines (ADA, WCAG), cross-browser compatibility, and mobile-first best practices to maintain a seamless experience across all devices.
- Provide technical support and training to content contributors and CMS publishers, ensuring adherence to web development best practices and efficient content management workflows.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, supporting the University’s digital transformation initiatives and long-term web strategy.
- Serve as a backup to the Senior Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist when that person is unavailable or out.
