Application Deadline: June 1, 2025
Job Description
Kiel University aims to attract more qualified women to professorships.
The Institute for Geosciences in the
Faculty for Mathematics and Natural Sciences
of Kiel University invites applications for a
W 3-Professorship in Hydrogeology and aquatic Geochemistry
to start at the earliest possible date.
The future job holder shall be responsible for the subject area Hydrogeology and aquatic Geochemistry in research and teaching.
We are looking for a scientist with a proven track record in hydrogeology and aquatic geochemistry to advance research in this area in an internationally visible manner. Potential research priorities of the professorship may include the hydrogeological and geochemical characterization of the subsurface as well as the understanding and quantification of the relevant processes taking place in the subsurface. Preferred issues are groundwater quality and quantity in urban and rural areas as well as coastal zones, also against the background of the increasing influences of climate change and the intensified anthropogenic use of the geological subsurface. The development and application of innovative concepts and methods from the laboratory to the field scale is expected.
The professorship is part of the network of working groups focusing on Applied Geosciences at the Institute of Geosciences, whereby close cooperation in research and teaching is desired. This includes in particular co-management and use of the Geotechnological center (Geotechnikum) as a research platform, for which a technologically outstanding and innovatively equipped large-scale test hall, currently under construction, and the TestUM field site are available, for research up to the field scale, including personnel resources. Furthermore, the professorship will be equipped with the analytical laboratory for aquatic geochemistry and laboratory facilities for teaching and research purposes, located in the newly constructed Institute of Geosciences building.
The professorship should pursue interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research approaches or be willing to do so. An interdisciplinary cooperation with one or more of the four research foci at Kiel University (https://www.uni- kiel.de/en/research/research-foci) is desirable.
Teaching is required for courses in the Bachelor's degree program in Geosciences and the Master's degree program in Applied Geosciences. Appropriate teaching experience is expected, as well as the ability to teach in German and English after three years at the latest. The focus should be on teaching basic hydrogeological and geochemical concepts as well as laboratory and field methods for hydrogeological and geochemical characterization of the subsurface. In addition, participation in teaching basic geoscientific content is desired.
Recruitment requirements are a university degree and doctorate in geosciences or a related field, preferably with a focus on hydrogeology or aquatic geochemistry. Experience with the successful, also coordinating, acquisition of third-party funding is expected as well as experience in university teaching and an internationally visible research activity. Experience in the planning and implementation of practical laboratory or field work, in the use of new hydrogeological and/or geochemical characterization methods and in cooperation with SMEs or authorities is advantageous.
Please refer to the recruitment requirements of § 61 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. More information can be found at www.berufungen.uni-kiel.de (in German).
Kiel University is striving to increase the number of female scientists in research and teaching and therefore expressly encourages qualified women to apply. Women will be given priority if their aptitude, qualifications and professional performance are of equal value.
Kiel University is committed to the employment of people with disabilities: Applications from severely disabled persons and their equals will be given preferential treatment if they have the equivalent qualifications.
We expressly welcome applications from people with a migration background. Application photographs are not required and we expressly request that you refrain from submitting any.
Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications, list of courses taught, copies of academic certificates, acquired third-party funding, research concept as well as teaching concept) along with your private and business address, telephone number and e-mail address should be sent (preferably in electronic form as a combined pdf-File to [email protected]) to the Dean of the Faculty for Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Kiel University, 24098 Kiel, Germany, by the 01.06.2025.
For further information on the position and the research unit, please contact Prof. Dr. Sebastian Bauer ([email protected]).
