The Department of Health and Sport Sciences (HSS) in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Louisville invites applications for a 10-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. To be hired at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, the candidate’s academic credentials would need to merit appointment with tenure. Preferred candidates will hold an advanced doctoral degree in a field related to Exercise Psychology and/or Exercise Physiology/Human Performance and have an excellent record of previous academic research experience in a university setting. Applicants with an established research agenda in exercise psychology, history of scholarship, and a current peer-reviewed publication record will be given preference. Additionally, candidates with evidence of teaching repertoire in more than one exercise psychology-related area (human performance, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, nutrition, long-term athlete development, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply. The mission of the Department of Health and Sport Sciences is centered on the development and preparation of individuals to be future leaders in a variety of metropolitan settings including higher education, allied health services, public and private corporations, and governmental agencies. The Department prepares and trains professionals in exercise physiology, human performance, health education, physical education, sport administration, and youth sports. The Department fulfills its mission by providing students with research-driven, student-focused, real-world experiences in a state-of-the-art setting with laboratory and academic spaces. We provide academic instruction at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels in addition to conducting theoretical and applied research. The Department also serves the University and metropolitan community through a variety of service classes fostering healthy and active lifestyles and by contributing professional consulting and service-learning opportunities to a diverse student body and community. The Department serves over 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students and includes 31 full-time faculty members.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Faculty are expected to maintain a competitive research agenda in Sport and Exercise Psychology, with demonstrated success in securing extramural funding from state and federal sources. Research initiatives should actively engage both undergraduate and graduate students, contributing to their development and hands-on experience. Faculty hired in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences will also be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Sport/Exercise Psychology, Holistic Coaching, Human Performance, or related fields, ensuring that course content aligns with standards set by our accrediting bodies (the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the National Committee for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE), and the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Education Recognition Program (NSCA-ERP)).
In addition to teaching, faculty members are expected to contribute to program, department, college, and university service, as well as to engage with discipline-related community partners. Responsibilities also include student advising, research mentorship, supervision of graduate theses and research projects, and collaborative initiatives with UofL Athletics and UofL Health. This is a 10-month appointment with potential opportunities for additional teaching in the summer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION (required)
Doctoral degree in Exercise Psychology, Human Performance, or field related to the position
Demonstrates excellence and leadership in scientific research and publishing
Demonstrates successful history of grant writing and grant-funded research
Demonstrates successful teaching experience in at least one of the following areas: sport/exercise psychology, human performance, coaching, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, nutrition, long-term athlete development
Demonstrates ability to work well and ethically with colleagues
Demonstrates interest in working in partnership with the university and communities in diverse settings
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Record of mentoring undergraduate or graduate students in research
Regular attendance and participation in National and International Conferences
Evidence of ability to be certified or preferably current certifications through the NSCA and/or ACSM
SALARY: Competitive, based upon qualifications and experience
APPOINTMENT: 10-month with the possibility of summer teaching
ANTICIPATED START DATE: August 1, 2025
