What Your Job Will Be Like:
Our team is seeking a Computer Scientist to join a multi-disciplinary group developing Electronic Warfare (EW) systems. Your primary focus will be full-stack development of complex tasking and data analysis software that coordinates and processes data from various passive and active Radio Frequency and Microwave Systems. The software consists of: 1) a web-based user interface (using the React framework and Java Spring back end) hosted on a central server, and 2) distributed radio software (Java Spring, Python, C++) that runs on local CPUs for each EW system and interfaces with embedded code on local SDR/FPGA.
Our advanced communication systems feature highly optimized, size, weight, and power-constrained signal processing transceivers, antennas, and processing on GPUs, FPGAs, and CPUs. Projects range from urgent, quick-reaction requests to longer-term efforts spanning 3-5 years. You will join two other computer scientists working on the software, as well as a larger team of RF microwave designers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and systems engineers.
This position requires on-site work in a collaborative electronics laboratory environment using iterative/agile methods to develop capabilities, along with occasional travel of 3-4 trips per year.
On any given day, you may be called upon to:
- Develop new features based on input from end users or signal analysts.
- Integrate complex digital signal processing code.
- Collaborate with the team on RF system conceptualization and realization.
- Research and develop novel RF Digital Signal Processing techniques.
- Analyze and field test RF systems.
- Interact with customers and stakeholders on system conceptualization and design.
- Maintain and utilize the continuous integration environment suite in the electronics lab.
- Deploy systems to local and distributed networks.
Salary Range:
$114,000 - $227,500
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and relevant experience defined by the following parameters:
- An Associate’s degree in a relevant discipline plus nine (9) years of directly related relevant work experience; or
- A High School Diploma plus thirteen (13) years of directly related relevant work experience.*
- Active DOE Q clearance and SCI, which may require a polygraph test.
*Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D S&E Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field with extensive programming experience.
- Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Four (4) years of directly relevant experience.
- Experience with variety of code bases to include Java, Java Spring, Python, and/or C++, GNU Radio, Matlab/Simulink, Python, C/C++, VHDL, or Verilog.
- Devops experience specifically with CI pipeline development and usage.
- Understanding Digital Signal Processing and/or Mathematical basis of associated RF Algorithms.
- Desire to learn or knowledge of DoD and IC organizations and associated systems and operations.
- Ability to work on site in an RF Electronics Laboratory.
- The ability and desire to participate in field tests.
- Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, Electronic Warfare, and Cyber Security systems and principles.
About Our Team:
The RF & Systems Electronics Center (Center 05300) provides key electronics systems work to a wide variety of nuclear weapons, space, intelligence, and military programs across Sandia and the Nation. The Advanced RF Systems group (05330) supports the Nation’s technology superiority strategies by delivering capabilities for RF & spectral dominance, global highly reliable communications, and novel advancements for future strength. We are a highly dynamic set of departments that cross-team to provide integrated engineering systems solutions ranging from core research through prototype development and high-end, fielded products.
The Advanced Systems department (05334) develops multi-domain novel electromagnetic attack & defense concepts and systems with an eye on low size, weight, and power constrained applications. Our customers include a variety of government organizations including the U.S Armed Forces, the Intelligence Community, and Special Operations. Our staff members have a diverse skills base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and system designs comprised of the latest associated hardware. We partner across the laboratory and the group to bring on other critical skill sets to our multi-disciplinary team to include computer scientists, systems engineers, and cyber engineers. Our design challenges include system development (designing scalable systems, systems integration into host platforms, etc.), understanding complex adversary systems and associated vulnerabilities, and signal analysis and generation of RF low probably of detect waveforms.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) SCI security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
