This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Science Research Technician 2: Wildlife Connectivity and Habitat Technician position, for the Human and Ecosystem Resilience and Sustainability Lab (HERS) at Oregon State University (OSU)-Cascades.

This position will be located in Bend, Oregon.

The BSRT will collect and process camera trap images from wildlife crossing structures located in Central Oregon and provide general support for wildlife connectivity projects. The incumbent will work autonomously implementing a camera trapping study design and decision-making protocols defined a priori. The employee will coordinate fieldwork, volunteer scheduling, and camera trap image database management.

This position will be generally supervised by the project PI and Research Analyst 3 for direction on project goals and objectives. The incumbent will have responsibilities to make decisions following the Oregon Wildlife Crossing Structure Camera Trap Monitoring Protocol and relevant agency protocol for environmental and safety requirements. The technician will be responsible for appropriately handling state agency owned camera trap images, including uploading large volumes of data to a shared database, reviewing and tagging images of wildlife, and converting images into tabular data for future analysis. Additionally, the technician will travel monthly with the project lead to remote camera sites along U.S. South Highway 97 and/or US Hwy 20 to refresh and maintain cameras located at current or planned mitigation infrastructure (e.g., wildlife crossing structures, deer guards, exclusion fencing). Travel in inclement conditions, including winter vehicle travel and hiking, may be required.

Key Responsibilities
70% office work:
Upload images from SD cards to external hard drive and corresponding database; organize images based on mitigation infrastructure type; review camera trap images for wildlife with a specific focus on ungulates; organize tagged images based on species; rename tagged images based on project nomenclature; enter data collected from tagged images into spreadsheet; prepare spreadsheets for analysis.

30% fieldwork:
Coordinate field resources (equipment and supplies), request landowner access, schedule fieldwork, reserve vehicles and lodging, plan routes, communicate with landowners, design and manage project databases, coordinate and train volunteers, and conduct field equipment inventories. Report directly to project PIs about project progress and arising issues. Monthly travel to U.S. Highway 97 and 20 mitigation infrastructure camera trap array sites; battery refresh; camera placement and removal; camera status data entry; camera troubleshooting, other field duties as needed.
What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
