Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per-course adjunct faculty member to teach MUSIC 226/424, Private Music Instruction: Vocal in the traditional undergraduate program in Spring 2025.
Fridays, 10:00am-12:30pm. This course will be taught in person, on the Moraga campus.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic and passionate individual to join our esteemed institution as an Assistant/Associate Adjunct Faculty in Music, specializing in accompanying and coaching for our Private Music Instruction Lab for Vocal (MUSIC 226/424). This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of aspiring vocalists in a supportive and creative learning environment. Essential skills include proficiency as an accompanist at the piano, depth of knowledge in solo repertoire from the Western Classical tradition (including Arias, Cantatas, Leider, and Chansons) and Musical Theater, and has experience teaching Pop, Jazz, and Commercial Music works in recital or music concert settings. The ideal candidate is experienced in teaching sight reading and musicianship (such as solfege), the application of music theory and analysis and Estill Voice training to a wide range of solo genres.
Responsibilities:
- Accompany vocal students on piano for studio coaching and recitals, providing support and musicianship guidance to enhance the development of their performance skills.
- Conduct individual and group vocal coaching for students enrolled in MUSIC 226 - Private Music Instruction Lab: Vocal
- Assess and evaluate students' diction (application of the International Phonetic Alphabet) and performance progress providing constructive feedback and guidance.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and encouraging learning atmosphere that embraces students as whole persons, inspiring students to explore and express their artistic range.
- Collaborate with fellow faculty members to coordinate works-in-progress monthly recitals, and end of semester juries.
- Demonstrate support of Estill Voice Training methodologies in vocal instruction, while also incorporating traditional and innovative teaching techniques that reflect a range of pedagogies
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, lesson plans, and evaluations, and submit midterm and final grades.
- Attend as vocal accompanist and faculty support for three 'Works-in-Progress" Student recitals per semester which occur on Fridays, 1:00-2:30pm (dates supplied in advance).
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Music degree (a B.A or B.M in Music Education, Music Performance).
- A minimum of a Master's degree in Music or a related field; candidates with significant equivalent professional experience and a Bachelor's degree in Music will also be considered.
- Proven teaching experience, preferably at the college or university level, with a track record of nurturing students' musical growth and development.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to provide clear and constructive feedback to students.
- Strong piano accompanying skills, with the ability to effectively support vocal students during in coaching and performances.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring accurate record-keeping and timely submission of assessments and reports.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment, respecting and celebrating individual student differences.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, including the support of Estill Voice Training application and overall success of the music program, the Performing Arts Department, and the institution at large.

The salary is $2,483 - $3,436, depending on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
