The Assistant Director of Data Analytics serves as the Data Expert for the Administrative Research Data Domain in the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) at Virginia Tech. Reporting to the IT Director and Data Steward, this position will recommend and implement project, process, and data solutions to meet the needs of the team, unit, university, and external stakeholders. The Assistant Director is responsible for operational aspects of managing the data domain, including reporting, analytics, and management of domain data maintained within in-house systems, university data repositories, and various workflow tools. The Assistant Director provides management and guidance to a Data Reporting Analyst who provides support for routine reporting, incoming request management, documentation, quality control tasks, and other operational needs. The successful candidate must be able to manage multiple simultaneous projects, prioritize and delegate tasks, establish relationships with key stakeholders across the university, and will possess strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical audiences. Candidate must be able to work highly independently when necessary, and equally well in close collaboration with the Data Steward, unit leadership, or project teams.

This position is eligible for hybrid or full remote, and the work arrangement will be confirmed up on hire. As necessary, may need to be onsite for collaboration purposes.

Required Qualifications

● Advanced degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Finance, or related quantitative discipline, or bachelor’s degree with relevant significant experience.
● Prior experience leading small teams, or managing projects and initiatives.
● Experience in business process analysis, data analytics or deployment of analytic techniques.
● Practical experience with SQL queries, analytics, data manipulation, and related relational database tools.
● Experience with the creation of data visualizations, dashboards, analytics products, metrics, or workflows.
● Ability to work with confidential information.
● Ability to think creatively, solve problems, and work in a highly collaborative and dynamic work environment.
● Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

● Previous supervisor experience.
● Experience in a similar operational and data quality control role with a focus on accuracy, reproducibility, end user enablement, and a customer service-oriented culture.
● Knowledge of SAS, Python, R, Java, VBA, or other programming languages with a focus on data processing.
● Demonstrated expertise in complex queries, analytics tools, visualizations, complex spreadsheets, or other related topics.
● Experience in statistical methods and trend analysis.
