Under supervision, perform duties required in the operation and maintenance of natural gas fired boilers, auxiliary equipment, steam and condensate return distribution system, complying with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate operating regulations and codes.

Ball State University welcomes applications for a 2nd shift Heat Plant Operator position.

Job Function:

Under supervision, perform duties required in the operation and maintenance of natural gas fired boilers, auxiliary equipment, steam and condensate return distribution system, complying with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate operating regulations and codes.

Minimum Education:

1.High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

1.Vocational School Training.

Minimum Experience:

1.Successful completion of an apprenticeship program as Stationary Engineer as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, or at least four (4) years of experience in operation and maintenance of a gas, and/or oil fired boiler plant or related equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
2.Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.
3.Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform mathematical calculations.
4.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty/responsibility.
5.You must be 18 years or older.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor natural gas fired boilers including combustion control and pollution control equipment. Record meter readings and maintain log sheets.
  • Operate heat plant auxiliary equipment (water treatment, feed water pumps, air compressors, valves, emergency power generating equipment, etc.)
  • Perform duties related to the construction, replacement, repair, and maintenance of all types of steam distribution equipment; perform maintenance duties such as pump, turbine, compressor and fan rebuilding.
  • Perform duties related to the replacement and repair of the boiler furnace refractory; install sludge drying equipment.
  • Perform pipe fitting, welding, metal work, rigging, low voltage electrical
    work, insulating and painting tasks.
  • Perform water treating tests, add chemicals, maintain water treating equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of work area, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job related chemicals, environmental concerns, and current technological improvements/advancements.
  • Demonstrate through periodic examination proficiency in all aspects of the operation including but not limited to boiler operation, plant operation and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
