What Your Job Will Be Like:

The W80-4 Warhead Case PRT is seeking a R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer with a specialization in composites, to join the Lightweight Structures Laboratory (LWSL)!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform as LWSL Coordinator responsible for prioritization of activities, technical work documents, and facilities management.
  • Conduct studies to determine the effect of process changes on the core manufacturability and performance.
  • Design, evaluate, manufacture, and oversee the implementation of changes to the hardware of our current process.
  • Develop and implement manufacturing processes for composite materials, including layup, curing, bonding, machining, and repair, while adhering to industry standards and best practices.
  • Support problem solving of manufacturing issues in a timely manner.
  • Provide guidance regarding design concepts to ensure the best manufacturing technique is being used to meet the design.
  • Participate in tool design reviews to ensure tools are feasible and reduce build times and program costs during assembly.
  • Troubleshoot and document anomalies.
  • Verify products against requirements.
  • Present at technical reviews.
  • Perform other PRT duties as assigned.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at the Livermore, CA location.

Salary Range:

$113,600 - $221,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • B.S. in a relevant STEM field plus (5) or more years’ related experience; or M.S. in a relevant STEM field plus (1) or more years related experience; or equivalent related experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Experience working effectively with different engineering and production teams to guide and implement build/process requirements.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with composite material types and properties, fabrication of complex components and assemblies, various manufacturing process, tooling and inspection techniques
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25%.
  • Position requires an active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, or equivalent DOD Top Secret level security clearance to start.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Strong technical skills with knowledge of or experience in some of the following areas: advanced composite materials, autoclave curing, laser projection, filament winding, mechanical assembly, bonding methods including surface preparation, mechanical design, data acquisition systems, and machining operations.
  • NW systems or component experience.
  • Experience working at Sandia National Laboratories, or with the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Experience leading and executing projects including various organizations, external partners, customers, and/or stakeholders.
  • Experience writing and implementing technical work documents.
  • Experience in implementing laboratory safety procedures.
  • Experience as a lead for a composite fabrication manufacturing engineering team or equivalent.
  • Experience writing technical requirements and reports.
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills.

About Our Team:

The Weapon Subsystems 4 (8445) department is one of two departments leading W80-4 Warhead Case PRT at Sandia National Laboratories. The departments plan, coordinate, and execute the design, development, and qualification activities in partnership with. The test and qualification team are responsible for activities supporting product qualification. The department works closely with the W80-4 system departments and other core partner organizations in modeling and simulation, analysis, quality, test, and hardware management and assembly.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
