Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Network Engineer I configures, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots USF's wired and wireless data network that includes the campus backbone, wide area connections between campuses, Internet connections, and IT's physical and cloud-based data centers. Follows organizational standards and architectures. Reviews and verifies network designs, including validation and error correction procedures, access, security, and audit controls. Contributes to the development of recovery routines and contingency procedures. Contributes to alternative network architectures, networking topologies, and design options.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design, configure, install and maintain USF's data network.
Assist with design, configuration, and installation of networking infrastructure to provide network access for all students, faculty, staff, and external institutions. Work with users to determine network needs and provide guidance for solutions.
Maintenance and Support: Maintain USF's wide-area connections. These include Internet connections, links into global research networks, and links to other campuses and university sites. Configure and maintain network services, such as DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, TACACS. Network support and security for Information Technology. This includes devices that support the information needs of the university. Respond to incidents and escalate tickets as needed. This position also supports 24x7 maintenance and participates in an on call rotation.
Wireless access installation and support: Install new wireless access points to grow USF's wireless local area network coverage. Provide support for the wireless network, including troubleshooting and incident response.
ACL's and Firewalls: Configure and troubleshoot ACL's and firewalls using appropriate security protocols and policies.
Facilities Planning Process: Assist with oversight for the facilities planning process for new buildings and renovations. Assist with network equipment selection and building cabling requirements for new buildings and renovation projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, or a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and one year of IT related work experience, OR a combination of 2 years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification, validated through certification requirements and documentation of completion, is considered to be related training.
PREFERRED:
CCNP or higher, experience with DNS, Radius, NTP, DHCP, TACAS, cloud-based networking, and strong communication skills.
