Are you passionate about hands-on engineering and dream of utilizing and developing state-of-the-art equipment and systems to validate the Nation’s most critical weapon systems? You could be the motivated measurement and test engineer that we are seeking to join our dynamic team of experimentalists at the Nation’s most capable, established and exciting experimental complex!
As a member of the Mechanical Environments Department in the Validation and Qualification Sciences Group, you will join a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, designers, test operation teams, business partners and technicians to develop, plan, design, analyze, schedule, implement, and document critical Mass Properties (MP) and other Sensor Measurements for our Nations Nuclear Deterrent components and systems. You will apply scientific theories and laws along with engineering methods and judgment to lead, coordinate and record critical data necessary to qualify systems for flight.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Work with experienced staff and technologists, ES&H partners, and other team members to ensure that customer’s objectives are safely met on time and within budget while following all corporate and Group Work Planning and Controls requirements.
- Work with Nuclear Deterrent System Teams to develop, design, and implement precision hardware for extremely sensitive, high accuracy MP equipment.
- Lead project development and measurement execution efforts with rigging and hoisting design and application, implement mass corrections to balance flight systems, and develop innovative systems and techniques to advance Sandia’s leadership in the field of experimental measurement.
- Travel will be required (less than 25%).
- Official title will be R&D Mechanical Engineer.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:
$95,400 - $185,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or equivalent STEM degree and 3 years’ experience with engineering measurement and associated technologies
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Experience with the design and manufacturing of handling or mounting hardware
- Experience with rigging, hoisting and crane operations
- Experience with interpretation, analysis and reporting of measured data
- Experience with large scale field experiments or large test systems
- Ability to apply knowledge and ideas to solve engineering problems
- Experience with scheduling and coordination of multiple projects and people
About Our Team:
The Validation and Qualification Sciences Group is responsible for large-scale experimental activities located in TAIII on Kirtland Air Force Base. The Mechanical Environments department is one of six departments within the group with the responsibility for developing and delivering experiments to provide information on the performance, safety, and reliability of nuclear weapons and other systems and to acquire data to validate computational simulations of these events. The Mechanical Environments department owns and operates Four Major Environmental Testing Facilities/Capabilities:
- Mass Properties Measurements
- The Centrifuge/Superfuge Complex
- The Mechanical Shock Complex
- The Water Impact/Drop Tower Complex
