Summary
The Office of Surgical Research (OSR) within the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a Lab Director to oversee the daily operations of 12 laboratories by supervising their respective lab representatives. The Lab Director will be responsible for various administrative, operational, and financial duties required to reach departmental goals and objectives. The Lab Director will support the Vice-Chair for Research, Senior Associate Administrator and Faculty Directors on departmental research initiatives, such as lab seminars, research travel awards, lab newsletters and capital equipment purchases.
Job Duties
- Manages the daily operations of 12 laboratories by supervising their respective lab representatives.
- Promotes collaboration among lab members and fosters connections with research groups within and outside Baylor.
- Regularly communicates research progress, findings, and potential challenges to the Principal Investigators and other key stakeholders.
- Supports the Department Leadership and the Director of Basic and Translational Research implementing new initiatives in the labs (ABBR and THI locations): designs and disseminates basic/translational research accomplishments in the format of a newsletter; Plans lab seminars and lab social events; oversees the Travel Award process for basic/translational trainees in the Department of Surgery.
- Oversees procurement of capital equipment and supplies, and manages all stages of the acquisition cycle (and disposal).
- Oversees the maintenance, calibration, and repair of lab equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results.
- Manages onboarding/offboarding and training of all DoS lab personnel.
- Oversees lab supplies purchasing by lab representatives.
- Coordinates monthly meetings with lab representatives to provide college and department updates.
- Oversees IACUC and IBC protocols submission and renewal of entire department.
- Ensures all DoS labs comply with all relevant safety and ethical regulations.
- Participates in the development of the budget for Office of Surgical Research and oversees expenditure of unrestricted and grant monies in the labs.
- Identifies cost-saving opportunities and optimizing resource allocation.
- Coordinates equipment and space surveys annually.
- Makes recommendations on laboratory space re-design and relocation to accommodate the arrival of new PIs and maintain dollar density metric mandated by the College.
- Interprets IACUC, Chemical Safety and other regulations related to basic/translational research laboratories and insures compliance; Serves as biosafety office for the Department of Surgery and liaises with Chemical Safety, Baylor Core Labs, Supply Chain and other teams to maintain day-to-day operations in 12 laboratories.
- Assists PIs hiring and managing the performance of lab personnel.
- Coordinates with PIs to determine equipment purchase priorities based on budget, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratories activities; and establishes procedures for management of the use of laboratory equipment including maintenance, repair and inventory.
- Plans and coordinates reconstruction projects in the lab, transfer of live animals, equipment and lab supplies for new faculty joining BCM.
- Performs other job related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
- Five years of relevant experience.

- Master's or PhD in science
