Job Summary
The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University seeks an Assistant Dean for Medical Education Research. The Assistant Dean will have a visionary leadership role in establishing infrastructure to support medical education research while integrating scholarship into innovative and curricular aspects of medical education throughout the institution. This position will also direct the MCG Educational Innovation Institute (EII) to champion excellence and innovation in health sciences and medical education. The mission of EII enhances student learning, student research, and faculty teaching by focusing on collaborative educational research and educator career development, spanning undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. The Assistant Dean for Medical Education Research reports to the MCG Associate Dean for Faculty & Continuous Professional Development. This position will have the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. This position is on non-tenure track.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement an educational research infrastructure that includes priorities and strategies for scholarly engagement and productivity that aligns with the mission of MCG and its stakeholders.
- Inspire and facilitate the reframing of educational problems and challenges to meet the needs of todays medical students, educators, and the UME curriculum.
- Collaborate with the Academic Affairs Office, curriculum committees, and departments to support medical student research.
- Design and promote an educational research dissemination plan that recognizes and elevates the quantity and quality of medical education research throughout MCG that focuses on curricular & programmatic innovations and enhances institutional reputation.
- Work closely with the Office for Faculty Development to provide professional development of medical school educator faculty by reinstituting the Educational Research Track (ERT) Fellowships and other similar programming.
- Provide direction and guidance to leadership & senior staff regarding the most recent and promising evidenced-based educational practices that could be adapted to increase educational impact.
- Supervise and mentor EII research faculty and staff to form collaborative team dynamic and service-oriented unit to meet stakeholders needs. Conduct annual performance evaluations of EII staff and faculty.
- Serve as key mentor and facilitator for departments and educational researchers throughout MCG to build research and scholarship capacity that will accelerate research innovation and enhance medical education research skills and competencies.
- Promote and develop medical educational synergies and relationships to support collaborations locally, among all MCG campuses and nationally.
- Oversee annual reporting of medical education scholarship, EII impact and grant productivity.
- Explore medical education grants to support innovation and research efforts.
- Other duties as assigned by the MCG Associate Dean for Faculty Development.
Required Qualifications
Doctoral degree in education or a health education related field, i.e., educational psychology, curriculum & instruction, educational leadership, research & evaluation methodology, medical education, etc.
Track record of advanced training and career experience in health profession educational research including extensive educational publications and contributions in peer-reviewed journal.
At least 7 years of experience in medical/health professions curriculum, teaching, and/or assessment
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
Evidence of ability as a teacher;
Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Visionary leadership with program/director experience and strong team management skills
- Demonstrated ability to provide strategic/tactical leadership toward achieving measurable outcomes
- Proven experience and success in research faculty mentoring and career development
- Expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research design and methods
- Expertise in educational research project management (e.g. as PI, leading cooperative networks, etc.)
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
