The Augusta University/University of Georgia (AU/UGA) Medical Partnership, a regional campus of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) located in Athens, GA, is seeking an experienced and innovative faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor to serve as a medical educator (MD, DO or equivalent) to teach pathology and clinical medicine across all four years of our undergraduate medical education curriculum in the areas of clinical skills, community and population health, simulation, and in large group learning and small group facilitation. There may also be opportunities to serve in curriculum leadership roles and/or participate in clinical care in an outpatient setting. We would also entertain applications from other specialties with proven expertise in lab medicine or histopathology.
AU/UGA Medical Partnership students study clinical and basic sciences in a highly integrated, systems-based, hybrid curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies into large and small group settings. work closely together in this setting to provide a unique learning experience for our students. We seek an outstanding, team-oriented faculty member who will share our excitement in continuing to build this dynamic and innovative educational program. Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate a commitment to educational research or other scholarly endeavors. The AU/UGA Medical Partnership campus offers unique opportunities for medical education research through collaboration with faculty across Augusta University, University of Georgia, and/or other institutions. Successful candidates will have a primary appointment at MCG at Augusta University, with the opportunity for an adjunct faculty appointment in the appropriate department at the University of Georgia.
The position is a non-tenure track appointment, and rank will be awarded commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
Teaching/Instruction (estimated 80% time) - Teach in undergraduate medical education in some or all of the following areas depending on curricular needs: pathology, clinical skills, community and population health, simulation, large group learning, and small group facilitation. Serve in curriculum leadership roles as appropriate. Serve as content expert in some areas of clinical or surgical pathology.
Research (estimated 10% time) - Participate in educational research or other scholarly endeavors in collaboration with faculty in department or at partner universities. Encourage scholarly activities with medical students and colleagues.
Service (estimated 10% time) - Serve on department or university committees. Also assist in academic advising and mentoring of students.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must have an MD, DO, or equivalent degree.
Candidates must have Board Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties. For those who have recently completed post-graduate education, Board Certification is expected to occur within five years.
Candidates should have or have the ability to obtain the following when appropriate for teaching assignments: an unrestricted medical license in the state of Georgia, appropriate hospital credentials and privileges, and an unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration license.
Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to individuals with prior teaching experience in U.S. medical education programs (a background in case-based and active learning methods in small and large group settings is especially desirable), and to those who will be actively engaged in some form of research or scholarship. AU/UGA Medical Partnership Clinical Science and Basic Science Educators work in pairs within our unique curriculum to facilitate case-based small group student learning on a weekly basis.

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

Augusta University and University of Georgia have partnered to create a four-year medical education program in Athens, GA, to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians that threatens the health of Georgians. The AU/UGA Medical Partnership combines the significant instructional and research resources of University of Georgia, the flagship land grant research university, with the expertise of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, Georgia's only public medical school. The Undergraduate Medical Education program, which graduated its first undergraduate class in 2014, focuses on active learning principles and small group learning sessions.
