Ball State University Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative team member to join our dedicated Access Services unit as a User Services Assistant. This position assists Ball State students, faculty, staff, and community library users. The User Services Assistant answers research-related questions, checks out materials, and is responsible for assisting in the closing of Bracken Library on Friday and Saturday evenings. Successful candidates will have customer service experience and enjoy contributing to student academic success. The User Services Assistant will work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to provide excellent customer services and to promote the services and collections of the University Libraries. Job Function:

Minimum Education:

Up to eighteen months of education beyond high school or equivalent

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree in related area.

Minimum Experience:

Over three months through one year of related experience; public service experience.

Preferred Experience:

Additional computer skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide service to users as scheduled at Bracken Library service points; check out and accept returned materials; provide assistance in the use of print and electronic resources; provide library and/or university related information; interpret library policies and procedures including the fine and cost policy; issue library cards; maintain hold shelf.
  • Provide information, assistance, and instruction to faculty, students, and staff in locating and using materials in the Education, Music and Media collections through online and physical resources; provide technical support and troubleshooting for commonly used computer applications including Microsoft Office and Adobe products; provide assistance, maintenance, and inspection for circulating equipment.
  • Train and monitor student assistants in the performance of area work assignments and job duties.
  • Assist with retrieving, photocopying, and scanning materials for Interlibrary Loan, processing document delivery requests, and processing electronic and print reserve requests.
  • Supervise the closing procedures as needed on weekends to ensure building is empty and secure before leaving; service photocopiers, microform readers/printers, and computers as appropriate; assist with closing as scheduled; monitory security conditions of Bracken Library.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Conduct physical searches for missing and lost General Collection materials; maintain search files and update the status in the system; provide information on materials to other library units.
  • Assist in the overdue process, preparing items for automatic notifications of fine and cost assessment and determining replacement costs of lost materials; receive and process new print materials.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
