Hiring Department

The University of Texas Permian Basin seeks applications and nominations for an academic leader for the College of Business. They will help guide the college's effort in academic and curriculum development, faculty and staff development, and help build partnerships with university stakeholders and alumni. The Dean of the College of Business will be an experienced, visionary leader with outstanding credentials and strength in fostering excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and community engagement. The expected start will be Fall 2024 or Spring 2025.

Position

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serving as the College's Chief Academic Officer, the Dean will play a central role in enhancing academic excellence and aligning priorities with the strategic plans for Academic Affairs and the University. The Dean serves as a member of the Provost's senior leadership team and will work directly with the Provost, other University leaders, faculty, and staff in formulating the College's academic goals and policies. The Dean is responsible for: the articulation of the College's vision in alignment with University mission on academic distinction; the development and administration of academic programs; scholarship, research, and service initiatives among faculty; college policies relating to instruction, curriculum, student success, research and other high-impact practices; and faculty and academic staff appointments and performance assessments.

The Dean supervises the activities within the College's academic units including the Department of Accounting, Finance, Energy Business, Management, Marketing and Industrial Technology. Additionally, the College collaboratively with centers and other units that support the academic mission of the University, including our Office of Innovation and Commercialization, Small Business Development Center, Shephard Leadership Institute and other.

Working collaboratively with all stakeholders in the campus community, the Dean supports excellence and creativity in teaching, research and service while fostering activities that improve the retention, achievement, and timely graduation of students. Additionally, the Dean works with external sponsors, funding agencies, industry and community leaders to develop research and educational partnerships that contribute to the economic vitality of the region.

The Permian Basin and West Texas - an Unprecedented Opportunity

The Permian Basin is one of the fastest-growing, culturally vibrant, economically invigorated regions of the country - full of industry, culture, and wide-open spaces. Spanning an area of 75,000 square miles, the low-lying geological formation of the Permian Basin is a stunning stretch of land with unique beauty that's home to the big, beautiful Texas skies. It's also home to the world's largest petroleum field.

Accounting for more than 30% of the domestic oil production and recently named the largest oil reserve on the planet, the Permian Basin region of West Texas is poised to boost local and global economies for decades to come. The International Energy Agency expects global oil demand to grow until around 2040, which experts predict will support the creation of around 45,000 jobs across the Permian Basin through 2030. Wind and solar developments are also diversifying the Permian Basin, putting it on the map as a critical energy provider for the future. West Texas is seeing an explosion in economic activity as other industries such as 'nance, construction, healthcare, digital technology, transportation, real estate, and public sector jobs grow alongside it.

The College

The mission of the College of Business at UT Permian Basin is to offer both undergraduate and graduate educational programs that are high quality and that evolve with our ever-changing economy; to foster the success of our students in their professional careers; to promote our community of scholars' excellence in teaching, intellectual contributions, and service; and to advance economic development within our region.

The College of Business has an active chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, International Honor Society. A graduate student must be in the top 10% of the junior, senior, or graduate classes to be eligible for induction. Eligible students are inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma in the spring of each academic year.

Programs offered through the College of Business are the Master of Business Administration with multiple tracks, MS in Energy Business, MS in Finance, and Master of Professional Accountancy, BBA with multiple tracks, BS IT and BAAS and many of them are AACSB accredited. All are professional programs to prepare individuals for business endeavors, although some students will proceed to doctoral level preparation. In each instance, the individual is expected to be more upwardly mobile in the organization. Emphasis on different types of organizations, including small business, service, and government are included to serve the needs of the region. Graduate courses are offered in the evening and online since most students are employed while working toward their advanced degrees. Accreditation

The College of Business is accredited by these agencies:

• SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges). This is the university regional accrediting body.

• AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). This is the business program accrediting body. It applies to accounting, finance, management, marketing, and the business master's programs. It is considered the premier accrediting agency.

Department of Accounting, Finance, and Energy Business

Accountancy

Administered by the College of Business, Accountancy is a discipline involving quantitative and qualitative information essential to the decision-making functions required in every type of organization.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with a major in Accountancy affords the opportunity for students to prepare for careers in managerial, governmental and not-for-profit accounting. Individuals who have earned a BBA degree with a major in Accountancy are encouraged to seek appropriate professional certifications such as CMA (Certified Management Accountant), CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner), and CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor). Individuals can also pursue the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) Certificate with a BBA, but must have 150 hours of educational credits to qualify for the exam.

Students who wish to pursue the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation need 150 credit hours to meet Texas Certification requirements. Students seeking to become a CPA are advised to follow the BBA in Accountancy with a Master of Professional Accountancy (MPA) degree or a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. For more information on this degree, please refer to the appropriate section of the Graduate Catalog. BBA students should work closely with an academic advisor in preparing for the MPA or MBA degree in order to avoid additional courses. A Dual Degree Program leading to a concurrent BBA and MPA is available for qualified students. The Dual Degree Program description and requirements follow the BBA requirements below.

Finance

The College of Business administers the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a major in Finance. The degree provides an understanding of financial markets, financial institutions, and financial decision-making of businesses. The course work provides training in conceptual and quantitative tools that a financial professional needs to know to be successful. Finance is a discipline that is grounded in economics and draws many of its tools from accounting. Thus a Finance major takes courses in economics and accounting beyond those required of all business majors.

Energy Business

The Master of Science in Energy Business at UT Permian Basin will provide an opportunity to specialize in the business side of energy and its management. It will provide an in-depth study of the energy industry and its operations, along with graduate-level training in business skills and knowledge needed to be successful in a career in energy

Department of Management, Marketing, and Industrial Technology

Management

The primary goal of the Management program is to give students an understanding of the nature and capabilities of people working in organizations. Faculty and business leaders believe an understanding of management theory and research provides the foundation for effective application and practice in the business environment. This foundation prepares students for careers in management such as administrators, executives, human resource managers, management consultants or entrepreneurs.

Marketing

The Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing is designed to provide a broad fundamental knowledge of the nature, structure, institutions, and functions of marketing. The student graduating with the degree can expect to be competitive in the general contexts of sales and marketing. In addition, the student will be able to analyze information that are critical to making marketing decisions whether in manufacturing, distribution (including retailing), service, or not-for-profit industry sectors.

Industrial Technology

Industrial Technology is a field of study designed to prepare technical and/or management professionals for employment in business, industry, education, and government. Industrial Technology is primarily involved with the management, operation, and maintenance of complex technological systems. The program also offers a specialization and a certificate in petroleum technology. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Industrial Technology degree receive a broad based general Industrial Technology education. Graduates of the program will be equipped to meet the new and emerging challenge of a modern high technology society.

Essential Functions

The University of Texas Permian Basin is seeking an exceptional individual to fill this critical leadership role and continue to advance the College of Business in its pursuit of academic excellence and societal impact. The dean will collaborate closely with faculty and University leadership to define strategic priorities and shape a clear, forward-looking vision for the College of Business. In addition to strong administrative experiences, the ideal candidate will have proven success in leading faculty in developing strong teaching, research, accreditation, and community/industry outreach initiatives.

Collaborate with faculty and University leadership in the following areas:

• Developing and executing strategies for strong student recruitment, retention, and graduation rates in alignment with the university plans and goals;

• Effectively communicating the importance of business majors for prospective students and their families, and current students;

• Promoting innovative and effective teaching within the College and provide appropriate supervision to the program coordinators, chairs and other faculty colleagues.

• Promoting faculty and student scholarly activities to enhance research productivity and extramural funding in the College

• Providing regular mentorship for our faculty or direct report to meet their professional goals while achieving UTPB expectations.

• Managing processes required for successful program accreditations for existing programs and for initial accreditation for new programs in the future

• High commitment to advancing the crucial role of business programs within the teaching, research, and mission of the university;

• Demonstrated visionary leadership with a proven track record of successful administrative leadership;

• Success building and executing a strategic and fiscally-sound academic budget;

• Solid track record in meeting University mission with respect to enrollment, graduation and research;

• Experience building successful, productive administration-faculty relationships and shared decision-making

Required Qualifications

• A terminal degree in finance, marketing, management discipline or related field;

• Progressive academic and administrative or professional experience with significant accomplishments, including credentials that qualify for a faculty position at the rank of Professor or an equivalent executive level experience including served in professional institutions;

• Experience in building successful, productive administration-faculty relationships and shared
decision-making;

• Commitment and proven track record to promote and advance undergraduate and graduate student success;

• Success building and executing a strategic and fiscally-sound academic budge

• Solid track record in meeting University mission with respect to enrollment, graduation and research

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a Dean or Associate Dean or extensive experience as a chair

• Proven track record in faculty mentorship with measurable outcomes

• Varied and extensive success in securing extramural funding from state and federal agencies

• Success in promoting an academic unit to community partners, leading to significant financial support

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multi-function units to enhance student recruitment

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.

Though people from all over the country call the Permian Basin home, there's no shortage of southern hospitality.
