The University of Missouri is advancing research capabilities in the state, embarking on a new, vendor-partnered, quantum computing initiative. The Technical Lead for Quantum Computing and HPC Services will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of quantum computing and high-performance computing services within the academic institution. The technical lead will:

Lead the teams that manage the deployment, operation, and integration of vended quantum computing systems and on-premises HPC clusters, ensuring high availability and performance.

Oversee personnel engaged in research facilitation and direct user support for advanced systems.

Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and IT staff to identify needs and develop solutions that enhance research capabilities.

Stay abreast of advancements in quantum computing and HPC technologies to drive innovation and maintain the institution’s competitive edge.

Provide technical expertise and guidance in the acquisition of new quantum computing and HPC hardware and software.

Represent the institution at conferences, workshops, and other events to share knowledge and learn from peers in the field.

Shift
Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm with some flexibility; some weekends/after hours work as necessary for effective system support

Minimum Qualifications
This role requires a foundational understanding of quantum computing technologies, HPC infrastructure, and the academic research landscape. A successful candidate will be highly proficient in at least one area, quantum computing or HPC, and familiar with the other, such that (in partnership with vendor resources and/or mentors) they will rapidly become proficient in the other.
A bachelor's degree in a major relating to technology, technology management, computer science, physics, or similar subjects (or equivalent experience) is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
Working knowledge of or proven capability to quickly learn programming language(s), operating systems, access techniques, research workflows, virtual system administration, and emerging technologies.
Understanding of and ability to support requirements for compliance with data security and privacy regulations relevant to quantum computing and HPC operations in academic research as well as more restrictive contexts.
Demonstrated ability to research, quickly identify and correct problems (debug) using system utilities / diagnostics.
Familiarity with systems analysis procedures and techniques.
Evening, weekend and call-in work may be required to meet deadlines and correct system failures.
Ability to work under pressure; meet deadlines; deal with difficult individuals while maintaining composure.
Remote work is generally acceptable for this position, but because of the hands-on technical nature of some parts of the work, and some requirements for participation at in-person events, the position holder must be within a reasonable distance to campus (2 hours maximum drive) with ability to perform as-needed commutes without additional compensation for travel.

Preferred Qualifications
Three years of HPC system administration or two years of experience with quantum computing technical administration. Anticipated Hiring Range
Salary Range: $85,000 - $130,000 Commensurate with experience
