College/Department Information
The Division of Laboratory Animal Services at Augusta University is a service organization, which facilitates the research and teaching mission of the University by meeting the animal research needs of the research community while concurrently providing for the safe and ethical treatment of research animals. Our emphasis on customer service is demonstrated by providing high quality animal care and research support in a timely manner while being courteous, professional, and responsive to our customers. We maintain a centralized animal care program with administrative management of 6 on-campus and 1 off-campus animal facilities. We report to the Vice President of Research, consult, and collaborate with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The animal use program is accredited by AAALAC, a Registered Research Facility with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA No. 57-R-0002) and has an Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Assurance number.
Job Summary
This position, under the supervision of the Animal Operations Training Coordinator, will be responsible for administering the training program for all staff using animals at Augusta University. The training program will ensure internal compliance with federal regulations, veterinary standards, and accreditation compliance. The training program will include, but is not limited to, didactic and practical training and training assessment for facility, equipment, and animal use.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
Assist with implementing a comprehensive didactic and practical training program for research staff and DLAS staff to ensure regulatory and accreditory compliance. Training topics will include, but are not limited to, the use of microisolator technique, animal handling and restraint, working procedures in ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 facilities, aseptic surgery, and working with chemical and biological hazards.
Assist in staff engagement and continuing education, including but not limited to presenting materials for staff meetings and assisting with the development of internal AALAS certification courses.
Maintain all training records within the current database software and other software/physical files as deemed necessary.
Design and apply assessment tools to measure training program effectiveness.
Assist with the process of animal facility badge access.
Assist with DLAS staff training, administrative, and veterinary staff projects when necessary.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization and three years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
AALAS Certification.
Training experience, specifically in the field of laboratory animal science or related animal field.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to obtain ALAT or higher AALAS certification within one year of start date.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary Minimum: $17.02 hourly.
Pay Band: B4
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
