What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Mechanical Technologist to join our product engineering team and work cohesively to handle a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. Join us in supporting engineering efforts across all phases of projects spanning from conceptual design studies, prototyping, fabrication, assembly, integration, and test.

This position will focus on mechanical activities for space payloads and requires understanding of requirements and product realization processes for space-based hardware. The selected candidate will join a high visibility program area that manages the full range of remote sensing space system payloads and ground system software. Improved design, development, realization, and quality are all major thrusts of our program.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support mechanical assembly and testing of sensor systems for space application
  • Work with optics, cameras, and sensors
  • Work with design teams for product realization, inspection, and procurement of mechanical components
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, work instructions and procedures
  • Manage department-owned labs, assembly space and equipment including tool calibrations
  • Capture work performed in manufacturing execution system via travelers and work instructions

Qualification for these tasks and activities will be gained through formal classroom training, performing organization specific on-the-job training (OJT), hands-on practical training, and knowledge/skill demonstrations.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$70,200 - $135,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, engineering technology or other related STEM field or equivalent education and experience (AS plus 4 years' or no degree and 8 years' relevant experience)
  • Experience assembling mechanical hardware for high reliability products such as aerospace and medical
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance or equivalent

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with aerospace or space systems or experience working in a high rigor manufacturing environment with quality controls and inspections
  • Experience using various equipment, i.e. common hardware tools, measurement gages, torque wrenches, temperature chamber, voltmeter, frequency counter, power meter, oscilloscope, etc.
  • Possess a strong dedication to a teaming dynamic and ability to collaborate with internal organizations and external production facilities and suppliers
  • Experience with mechanical design, analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Ability to work in a class 100 cleanroom
  • Ability to understand mechanical drawings, geometric dimension and tolerancing
  • Experience in product realization of mechanical components including procurements, inspections, inventory, product preservation, nonconformance and corrective action management
  • Ability to work in a dynamic atmosphere with changing priorities
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and balance competing activities
  • Strong written and verbal skills, detail oriented with a keen focus on customer service
  • Active DOE Q clearance

About Our Team:

We provide the competencies necessary for harnessing and developing the world’s best technologies, practices, and suppliers for realizing advanced Remote Sensing Systems (RSS). The RSS Group leads and implements the design, fabrication, integration, testing, and delivery of the Global Burst Detection (GBD) Program Satellite Payloads. We provide a broad competency base of needed skill sets for the development of advanced satellite payloads, ND support needs, and other WFO programs. We can use our unique capabilities and team to provide end-to-end program needs. The team has strengths in: analog/digital design, embedded electronic design, software design, electronic/mechanical fabrication and testing, optical science and design of optical sensor systems, power systems, test and integration utilizing space environmental test capabilities, and system tester development.
