Job Description
Summary
The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a caring, compassionate and reliable Medical Assistant to support the clinicians providing primary care services to private practice patients. The candidatewill assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the physician. The main responsibilities include interviewing patients, measuring vital signs (i.e. pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height) and recording information on the patient\'s electronic chart using EPIC.
Job Duties
- Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms.
- Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and in some cases administering tests such as EKGs.
- Answers clinic telephones and resolves issues or routes calls to appropriate person.
- Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation.
- Correctly collect and label patient specimens for lab analysis.
- Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
- Schedules patient tests and appointments and prepares patient charts.
- Maintains patient and services rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
- Takes an inventory of clinic supplies and orders new supplies and equipment.
- Sorts clinic mail and files patient medical records.
- Performs other duties as specified including floating to other FCM clinic locations.
- Educates patients about their conditions and self-care.
- Assists providers in filling out health related paperwork for patients.
- Orders supplies as needed.
- Cross trains to gain proficiency in staffing Comm Center, monitoring inventory and converting visits to virtual appointments.
- Assists with scheduling and patient check-in.
- Monitors assigned provider baskets, completes high priority messages and addresses incoming patient encounters.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT,NHA, NAHP, or AMCA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the healthcare field and medical terminology.
- Ability to type 40 words per minute.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
