What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to join the Control, Monitoring, and Data Acquisition (CM/DAS) team for the Z Machine. This role is pivotal in supporting the operations of the Z Machine, the world’s most powerful and efficient laboratory radiation source. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team responsible for monitoring, controlling, and acquiring data during Z Machine experiments, ensuring data integrity. This position offers the unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research and technology in a high-stakes, collaborative environment.

As a member of the CM/DAS team, you will play a crucial role in both the day-to-day operations and long-term improvements of our systems. You will work closely with scientists, engineers, diagnosticians and IT professionals to ensure the seamless execution of experiments, the reliability of data acquisition systems, and the robustness of our controls infrastructure. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Monitor and control the operational parameters of the Z Machine using both COTS and custom hardware and software.
  • Setup and configure the data acquisition systems for Z machine experiments.
  • Ensure the integrity and reliability of data acquisition systems, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration of the electronic instrumentation.
  • Layout, build, and wire controls systems hardware.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, including technical work documents, operator aids, configuration documents, and visual diagrams.
  • React quickly to troubleshoot and solve problems that are impacting the ability to operate the Z Machine.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$70,200 - $135,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High school diploma plus five or more years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with data acquisition equipment or electrical diagnostic systems (e.g. oscilloscopes, delay generators, power supplies, programmable logic controllers, time-domain reflectometry, attenuators, etc.)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • The ability to work occasional, minor overtime or work a flexible schedule as needed to support Z machine operations
  • Experience performing data acquisition for a large facility and/or in an R&D environment
  • Certifications in relevant areas such as electrical theory, electronics, or circuit analysis
  • Experience wiring electronic systems
  • Experience building cable assemblies
  • Familiarity with LabView and National Instruments Hardware
  • Familiarity with network infrastructure

About Our Team:

The Z Data Management & Insights department, org. 1678, provides Information Technology and Operational Technology infrastructure, products, and services for the Z Machine enterprise in the Pulsed Power Sciences center, center 1600. Additionally, the department is tasked with developing data management and data governance strategies and technical solutions for Z facility data. This work is accomplished through collaborations with operations, engineering, science, and program teams. Solutions address quality, efficiency, safety, and security that are well-aligned to achieving, and enabling, the scientific goals of the programs performing experiments at Z. The department’s teams consist of an IT infrastructure operations team, an application solutions team, a Control Monitor and Data Acquisition (CM/DAS) team, and a web content management team.
