What Your Job Will Be Like:

Join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security! You could be the highly motivated R&D Mechanical Testing Engineer we’re looking for to be part of our diverse team! An opening exists for a mechanical engineer to lead and support teams in the design, development, production, sustainment and field support of Safe Guards Transporters (SGT), Mobile Guardian Transporters (MGT), and specialized packaging which are used by DOE’s Office of Secure Transportation (OST) and other customers in the safe and secure transportation of US nuclear weapons, special nuclear materials, and other high-value assets.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan and conduct component and system level testing to support multiple Mission requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and technologists on many challenging and innovative projects to perform quality mechanical testing.
  • Support efforts to identify and implement both technical and operational laboratory improvements.
  • Provide technical guidance to laboratory technologists.
  • Support the development and execution of test specifications to ensure test units are exposed to the correct environments.
  • Implement work planning and control processes to assure safe, secure, and high-quality operations.

Must be will to travel.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering or related STEM field, plus three (3) or more years of directly related experience; Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Equivalent experience in lieu of degrees must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Experience designing mechanical components and/or systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in the following:
  • Automotive engineering or hobbies that include repair/restoration/customizing of automobiles, motorcycles, aircraft, etc.
  • Engineering principles to research, design, or develop mechanical & structural systems.
  • Familiarity with technical drawings and 3D solid modeling (e.g., CAD, SolidWorks, Creo, Catia, MicroStation, etc.)
  • Ability to apply creative problem-solving techniques to derive sound engineering solutions when multiple constraints exist.
  • Excellent personal interaction skills with management, technologists, and peers.
  • The ability to work effectively in a close team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Active DOE L or Q clearance

The Transport Safeguards and Surety Program (6620) and Mobile Guardian Transporter Project offer you the opportunity to make an enduring contribution to United States’ safety and security by contributing to the development of the next generation Over-The-Road Transportation System for nuclear assets. The US nuclear deterrent depends critically on the safe and secure movement of nuclear weapons and components among sites in the DoD and DOE complex, and the MGT program sits of the forefront of enabling that mission for decades to come. Staff on the MGT project have deep technical skills and provide leadership to a broad team from across the lab developing state-of-the-art structures, communication systems, electronics, and deterrents. The people in the organization work closely with the NNSA Office of Secure Transportation to ensure mission success regarding MGT cost, performance, and schedule. Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia\'s discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
