Postdoctoral Appointee –Nuclear Forensic Software Development
Job Description
We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee to support the development of augmented reality and virtual reality software solutions that will be used in national security mission space. Successful candidates will work closely with other team members to gather requirements, design and implement software to assist with complex mission tasks, and deliver detailed documentation of the products and their implementation. Security clearance-eligible candidates with a desire to apply advanced augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) development principles to national security application space are encouraged to apply. The position is initially for one (1) year, with the possibility of extension for up to three (3) years, depending on funding and performance.
Who We Are
The Science & Technology Integration group at Argonne National Laboratory has a broad research portfolio applying radiochemistry expertise to national security problems. Activities within the group range from aqueous separations to particle transport, emergency response, and material characterization. We heavily collaborate with other groups at Argonne across several divisions and directorates. Our group is part of Argonne’s Strategic Security Sciences Division, which researches, develops, and implements practical approaches and technical solutions to address complex and enduring threats to national and global security.

Key Responsibilities
Collaborate closely with the project team to develop augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) software applications pertinent to national security mission space.
Maintain cutting-edge knowledge of advances in AR/VR software and hardware developments.
Employment of the developed applications on hardware in the field.
Publish papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals.
Actively collaborate with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues.
This position will be hybrid, with on-site presence at Argonne’s Lemont, IL campus required 3 days each week.
Position Requirements
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years or within the next eight months from an accredited college or university.
The candidate must possess a PhD in software engineering, nuclear engineering, computer science, or a related field.
The candidate must have the ability to independently derive research insights to bring them to fruition through publication or demonstration on mission applications.
Applicants should demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills.
The ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
Programming expertise in JavaScript, C++, C#, Python, Objective-C, Swift. Experience with user-minded software development is preferred.
Research experience in ONE or more of the following areas: Complex systems modeling, including simulation or analytical modeling, high performance computing, parallel programming, or cloud computing, data science, data analysis, business intelligence, or machine learning, video game or user interface design.
