Job Description

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about hands-on physics and materials science research? If so, we invite you to apply to join Sandia’s Ceramics and Materials Physics department as an Undergraduate Intern. In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to tackle unique research challenges. As a department, we synthesize and characterize new materials and evaluate performance and reliability of electronic devices. Outstanding undergraduate students in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, and related fields of study are encouraged to apply.

You will have an opportunity to learn from and work with a diverse group of Sandia staff, technologists, postdocs, and fellow student interns. Sandia, and our department, highly value supporting interns in their professional and academic growth.

Our team has an immediate opportunity for a year-round undergraduate intern focused on processing of ceramic and composite materials for energy harvesting. Job responsibilities include performing synthesis of materials and forming composites; characterizing material properties such as viscosity, particle size, thermal analysis, phase identification with X-ray diffraction, microstructural analysis with optical and scanning electron microscopy; and compiling these results into presentations, memos, and publications for scientific journals. This internship is for hands-on laboratory work; you must be able to work on-site at Sandia New Mexico in Albuquerque.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Synthesize a new ceramic material
  • Create a new ceramic part using slurry casting and high temperature sintering
  • Collect and analyze data using advanced characterization techniques
  • Compile results into presentations, posters, memos, and publications for scientific journals
  • Support general laboratory needs

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package.
