Job Description

The Chemical Dynamics in the Gas Phase group within the Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CSE) Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to work with Dr. Rebecca Caravan to perform experimental gas-phase kinetic and mechanistic studies of reactive intermediates.

The Postdoctoral Appointee will optimize and utilize a new time-resolved broadband absorption experiment to interrogate the kinetics and mechanisms of reactive intermediates (e.g., peroxy radicals and Criegee intermediates) across a broad range of conditions, to understand the chemical physics driving their reactivity, and the role that they play in complex environments such as Earth’s atmosphere.

Additional opportunities to participate in experiments at DOE light sources (e.g. the Advanced Light Source, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) in parallel with the work at Argonne may also be possible as part of collaborative work.

The start date of the position is flexible. Interested applicants please complete the application herein. Please send any informal enquiries to Rebecca Caravan (caravarl@anl.gov).

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD in chemistry (or a related field) with 0 to 5 years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent. The successful candidate will ideally have research experience in experimental gas-phase physical chemistry or atmospheric chemistry, and in the optimization of new experiments.

Essential experience:

• Vacuum technology

• Gas-delivery

• Data acquisition systems

• Lasers

• Spectroscopy

Desirable experience:

• Laser-flash photolysis

• UV-Vis spectroscopy

• Programming for data acquisition and analysis (e.g. LabVIEW, Python, Igor).

• Chemical kinetics and mechanistic studies

The Postdoctoral Appointee will work primarily in a laser laboratory within the CSE division.

The successful candidate will join a supportive and broad team of experimentalists and theoreticians and will take part in and have the opportunity to lead collaborative projects within the group and beyond. Thus, the candidate will need to be able to work successfully as part of both small and large teams, as well as independently.

The successful candidate will also be required to present their work at scientific meetings and to lead the preparation of peer-reviewed publications. As such, they will require excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The successful candidate will need to have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
