We are seeking mission focused mid-career to experienced Systems Engineers (Job Title: R&D S&E Systems Engineer) to join the W80-1/W84-0! This department has stockpile stewardship responsibility for enduring stockpile systems. Positions provide a Systems Engineering experience in a multidisciplinary working environment with engaging technical work for engineers of all specialties and levels. Systems Engineers in this department will contribute to new projects and ongoing operations. Engineers will assist with day-to-day operations, trouble-shooting, and problem-solving with multidisciplinary teams across the Nuclear Security Enterprise; develop new assessment technology to deepen our understanding of safety, security and performance; and interact closely with the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Department of Defense to ensure that their needs are addressed. Stockpile Systems strives yearly to increase the quality and depth of its technical basis used to evaluate the system’s state of health, which culminates in an Annual Assessment Report sent to the President of the United States.

On any given day, you may be called to:

  • Investigate/troubleshoot anomalies in cross-functional teams
  • Team with other design agencies to plan, execute and analyze data from advanced experiments
  • Analyze mechanical assemblies
  • Analyze system and subsystem architectures
  • Provide technical consultation on critical design elements
  • Integrate and test subassemblies
  • Plan and execute testing for environment and qualification
  • Derive, reconcile, and track requirements
  • Present at technical design reviews and other forums
  • Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range:

$130,100 - $258,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor\'s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or in a related field plus 5 years of related experience or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field plus 1 year of related experience, or combination of education and equivalent engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Proven experience working with DOE, NNSA, DOD, or Federally Funded Research and Development Centers
  • Systems engineering experience
  • Project management experience
  • Mechanical Engineering skills, such as: computer aided design, structural dynamics, vibration characterization, structural analysis, heat transfer analysis, laboratory measurement techniques and diagnostics, computational simulation and modeling, integration of subsystems, fabrication of prototypes, and/or conductance of qualification tests

About Our Team:

The W80-1/W84 Systems Engineering department is responsible for Stockpile Stewardship (sustainment, maintenance and logistics, and general management) for both the W80-1 and W84-0 nuclear warheads. In close collaboration with NNSA NA-122 and US Air Force customers, and Nuclear Security Enterprise, the Weapon System group extends the critical leg of the US Nuclear Deterrence through their Protected Period and eventual transitions with the Life Extension Program(s).
