JOB DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Buke's lab is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Biological Scientist III. This role will involve providing both administrative and scientific support to the Principal Investigator (PI) and laboratory personnel. Our research focuses on exploring the role of neuronal circuits and metabolism in complex rodent behavior across the lifespan.

Duties Include:

Research coordination and laboratory maintenance: Responsibilities include: 1) Working with Burke and Maurer lab to oversee IACUC inspection preparations and compliance regarding surgical procedures 2) maintaining surgical and electrophysiology equipment 3) monitoring all surgical procedure and related drug (DEA) logs 4) communicating any concerns/issues with PIs as necessary 5) Ensuring EH&S, IACUC, DEA compliance requirements are met by providing oversight and training, ordering supplies, inventory, radiation surveys, supervising compliance with hazardous waste and biological safety requirements, routine record keeping, maintaining stock solutions including cell culture media and common buffers 6) Expense and finance via invoices/consolidation of payment for all supplies/travel using Concur 7) Maintain laboratory website utilizing WordPress to makes trainee, alumnus, research and publication updates.
Conducting experiments: Duties include 1) designing and implementing new molecular protocols, 2) monitoring rodent feeding schedule and performing body condition scoring throughout experimental testing 3) performing drug injections and infusions required for testing 4) conducting rodent behavioral training and testing sessions 5) collecting electrophysiological data 6) performing analyses of gene expression, 7) interpreting/providing data to PI and analyzing data per PI instruction, and 8) gene cloning.
Animal husbandry: Duties include 1) handling and maintaining inventory of transgenic animal colonies 2) Initiating transfers from breeding core and among other PIs using this resource.
Performing rodent survival surgeries and associated postoperative tasks: Assists with surgeries for both Burke and Maurer labs. Survival surgeries to include electrode implantations, cannulations, and AAV administration procedures. Postoperative care duties include daily animal health checks/monitoring, administration of necessary pharmaceuticals (e.g., analgesics), and consultation with vet staff as needed. Primary surgeon is also responsible for completing surgical logs and later archiving those surgical records.
Tissue collection and histology: Duties include 1) performing euthanasia/perfusions for tissue harvest 2) tissue sectioning (cryostat/vibratome) 3) histology (staining procedures, immunohistochemistry techniques).
Mentoring/supervising: Assuming a leadership role with respect to new trainee and undergraduate research assistant orientation and training. Duties include 1) assisting with student “onboarding” procedures (e.g., IACUC and EHS requirements) 2) training all students to properly handle rodents and conduct behavioral tests, 3) supervising students following completion of appropriate training 4) helping students interpret and analyze project data 5) coordinating student scheduling.
EXPECTED SALARY:
$68,000 - $71,000

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master's degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.
