Job Description
Sarah Lawrence College Department of Biology seeks part-time guest faculty members for the 2024-25 academic year. We are seeking instructors for three biology courses: one course in the Fall ’24 semester, and two in the Spring ’25 semester. Candidates should indicate their interest in teaching one, two, or three of these courses.

We are interested in courses covering a subfield of cellular/molecular biology of the applicant’s choosing in agreement with departmental needs. Potential courses include but are not limited to: cell biology, developmental biology, human disease, immunology, neurobiology, animal physiology, and stem-cell biology.

The Fall course will be a lecture capped at 45 students. The topic should be of broad appeal to students across to college and taught at an introductory level (for instance, similar courses routinely taught include Drugs and the Brain, Human Genetics, and Evolutionary Biology). Lecture courses have two components: the full class meets 2x/week for lecture, and 4 smaller sections meet biweekly for what we call group conference. Group conferences are used for activities that complement content covered in lectures.

The Spring courses will be capped at 15 students and include a seminar class (typically meeting 2x/week) and biweekly meetings with individual students to develop a semester-long independent project, called conference work, which typically takes the form of a substantial literature review. An instructor may choose to include a laboratory component with one Spring semester course, depending on the nature of the course.

We seek instructors dedicated to developing the research, writing, and analytical skills of their students in addition to imparting the material of their discipline. As they prepare their applications, candidates are encouraged to consult the SLC course catalogue to view the style and content of course descriptions, especially courses taught in science and mathematics.

Application materials must include: cover letter; CV; statement of teaching philosophy including how consideration of diversity, equity, and inclusion informs your teaching; a catalog-style description of your proposed courses including any textbooks you would use; and three letters of reference.

Compensation for this position is on a per-course basis, contingent on teaching experience.
Required Qualifications
A PhD is required and college-level teaching experience is preferred.
