Job Description
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Life, the Associate Dean for the Campus Experience is
responsible for the advocacy and leadership of the campus experience and assumes critical leadership
oversight over the Departments of Residential Experience and Campus Housing & Auxiliary Services. This
role is essential in fostering an engaging, inclusive, and supporting a campus environment that aligns with
the college's Catholic, Lasallian, and Liberal Arts traditions. The Associate Dean is dedicated to enhancing
student engagements, retention, and success through strategic leadership and collaboration with campus
partners within and outside of the Division of Student Life. The Associate Dean creates and implements a
vision for the campus' lived experience, ensuring the integration of residential and auxiliary services
support the mission and goals of the institution. The Associate Dean is responsible for managing the
expected revenue of $19 million+ from on-campus housing and oversees the business, and financial aspects
of housing and auxiliary operations to provide amenities to maintain and enhance the student experience.
This includes developing and monitoring budgets, optimizing revenue streams, and ensuring the financial
sustainability of housing and auxiliary services. Additionally, this role works to intentionally support the
transformative living and learning environment that fosters inclusion and community-focused initiatives
beyond the classroom. This comprehensive approach ensures that the residential and on-campus
experiences contribute significantly to students' overall development and success.
The Division of Student Life intersects at multiple points of a student's journey at Saint Mary's. With areas
that promote students' living experiences, wellness, and engagement, Student Life accompanies students
on their academic and co-curricular journey at Saint Mary's. The Division of Student Life creates a sense of
belonging, offers participatory opportunities, and encourages students to contribute back their talents.
Departments within Student Life include Campus Assault, Response, and Education (CARE), Campus
Housing, Club Sports, Community Life, Center for Women & Gender Equity, Counseling and Psychological
Services, the Dean of Students, Intercultural Center, New Student & Family Programs, Public Safety &
Transportation, Residential Experience, Recreational Sports, Student Involvement and Leadership, and the
Student Health Center.
1. LEADERSHIP &ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT: Supervise and
provide leadership to central office professional staff within Campus Housing
& Auxiliary Services and Residential Experience, including residential staff
that oversee the residence halls. Develop and implement a strategic vision of
residential/auxiliary programs, services and operations that align with the
college's mission and goals and promote student engagement, retention and
success. Support the Director of Campus Housing & Auxiliary Services in
oversight of analyzing and projecting statistics, capacities, assignments,
tracking, billing, and budget related to housing and dining rates that align
with the financial and operational goals of the college. Collaborate with
senior leadership and partners campus-wide to integrate housing and
residential services with other student engagement and retention initiatives
that meet student and campus needs. Drive the marketing and
communication strategies of housing and residential auxiliary services to
promote and educate on student services. Lead the development and
implementation of innovative initiatives to enhance the campus experience
through identifying emerging trends and best practices in housing and
residence life. Manage department's emergency protocols and response.
Provide training and regular communication to residential staff regarding
preparations and responses to critical incidents and campus emergencies.
Oversee collaboration between Campus Housing, Facilities Services, and
Campus Safety on work orders, facilities renovations, maintenance work
within designated residential areas and emergency situations related to
residential students. Maintain critical partnerships with Student Life offices
and other campus personnel.
2. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT: Initiates and
coordinates program assessment, policy development, and evaluation for all
managed areas. Directs all programming expectations within a
developmental residential curriculum framework, covering educational,
social, academic success, mental wellness, and alcohol awareness programs.
Synchronizes the administration and management of programmatic funds for
each department, residential staff, student-led initiatives, and department-
led services. Develops annual goals and objectives, learning outcomes, and
provides regular updates to the Vice President. Assists with review and
adjustments to housing and residential policies and procedures, as noted in
the Student Handbook. Guides the creation and execution of signature
residential programming and community-building partnerships through
Living Learning Communities, Residence Hall Association, and student
leadership development. Fosters an environment that supports student
leadership and involvement in residence life. Utilizes assessment methods to
adjust programmatic efforts, residential policies, and procedures to meet
current needs of students. Integrates and advocates for Diversity, Equity,
Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) to be infused in the overall programming
and development of engagement initiatives for the campus experience and
across the departments within the Student Life Division and campus,
ensuring all programs are inclusive and reflective of diverse student needs.
3. CAMPUS-WIDE COLLABORATION: Oversee and participate in campus
committees related to housing, residence life, and student leadership/engagement.
Work closely with campus departments, including
Facilities Services, Dining, Dean of Students Area, Enrollment/Admissions,
Academic Affairs, Tutoring and Student Support Services, Campus
Recreation, Campus Safety, Health Center, Center for Women & Gender
Equity, Intercultural Center, Student Involvement, Undergraduate and
Graduate academic programs to enhance the campus experience. Lead
initiatives to integrate housing and residential auxiliary services with
broader student engagement and retention efforts. Serve as liaison between
students, staff, faculty, and external partners to address and resolve issues
impacting the campus lived experience. Facilitate communication and
coordination among stakeholders while advocating for the needs and
interests of students in campus decision-making. Spearhead innovative
conversations with dining services to reimagine and provide creative food
service solutions for various campus populations, including undergraduate
and graduate students and employees, ensuring 24/7 accessibility.
Invigorate existing amenities such as care packages, warehouse and post
office services, streaming and wifi services, laundry services, and cloud
printing to enhance the overall student experience.
4. STUDENT SUPPORT & CRISIS MANAGEMENT: Oversee the training of
professional and student staff in conflict mediation, crisis response, and
student support. Manage complex and/or escalated student issues and
incidents impacting the residential experience, ensuring compliance with all
laws and regulations. Coordinate streamlined responses and address larger
trends and escalated issues within crisis management and emergency. Serve
as a resource for families of students with residential concerns. Lead cross-
departmental training on care and support for students in distress. Maintain
and coordinate the College's Emergency On-Call system. Serve on the
Outreach, Referral, & Behavioral Intervention Team (ORBIT) committee to
advocate for and support students of concern. Collaborate with the Office of
Community Life to address complex behavioral and mental wellness issues
among the residential student population. Assess current practices and align
them to meet the changing needs, generations, and trends to enhance the
overall student and family campus experience.
5. RESIDENTIAL & LEADERSHIP CURRICULUM: Envision and drive a
campus experience that aligns with the mission and values of the College
through a comprehensive residential and leadership curriculum. Aid the
Assistant Director of Residential Experience with the implementation and
assessment of a residential curriculum that meets the needs of the first year,
sophomore, junior and senior experiences to include programmatic,
educational, leadership and co-curricular initiatives. Collaborate with
appropriate campus partners to create and deliver a thoughtful and
intentional curriculum that expands to the campus community and enhances
a student's experience, engagement and sense of belonging at the College.
6. Other Duties as Assigned Serve as instructor for EDUC-085 leadership course
and First Year Life Skills initiatives. Participate in both division and College
committees as assigned. Work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, and culturally
diverse campus environment and develop effective relationships within the division
of Student Life and with other areas of the College.
Evenings and weekend work are heavily involved.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: REQUIRED: Master's required
PREFERRED: MA
Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): 5-7
Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical)
Experience working closely with populations from diverse backgrounds in a higher education setting (e.g. academic,
socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds). Experience dealing with confidential issues. Excellent
administrative, interpersonal, problem-solving, listening, verbal and written communication skills. Understanding of
information technology as applied to a residential system. Demonstrated knowledge of higher education student
development theory, risk management and legal issues. Ability to relate to students, parents, guests, community
members, faculty, and staff in a courteous and professional manner. Demonstrated excellence in Microsoft Office
operating systems including internet and email usage. Experience with Datatel Colleague, residential
life/housing/student conduct software with preferred and demonstrated ability to learn new software applications.
Must be able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time in a fast-paced work environment. Demonstrated knowledge
and understanding of FERPA, Title IX, ADA, and other local, state and federal statutes that affect the Office of
Residential Experience and the Dean of Students area. Fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
