This position provides direct supervision to the Campus Safety Officers assigned to different shifts. The position requires the ability to communicate, solve problems, collaborate with the campus community, and make decisions that promote campus safety.

A Campus Safety sergeant will be involved in making recommendations/decisions related to hiring, training, performance evaluations, scheduling, and delegation of assignments. A sergeant will respond to questions and concerns from the public, outside agencies and support staff as well as officers. This crucial position ensures that the members of the Department

operate in accordance with the policies and procedures of the department and the College. The Campus Safety sergeant performs all of the duties that the officers perform.

This position provides essential services to the College, including non-scheduled overtime, off-duty return to campus for emergencies and other duties as assigned. The sergeant may serve as the Campus Safety representative for various meetings on campus.

This position reports to a lieutenant in Campus Safety and may be assigned projects by the chief/executive director. The department of Campus Safety and Transportation are part of the Division of Student Life.

The Division of Student Life intersects at multiple points of a student's journey at Saint Mary's. Departments within Student Life include Campus Assault, Response, and Education (CARE), Campus Housing, Club Sports, Community Life, Center for Women & Gender Equity, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Dean of Students, Intercultural Center, New Student & Family Programs, Campus Safety & Transportation, Residential Experience, Recreational Sports, Student Involvement and Leadership, and the Student Health Center.

1. Supervision: Provide supervision, guidance, leadership, mentoring, and assistance to Campus Safety Officers. Conduct performance appraisals of employees. May have to work different shifts to ensure 24/7 safety coverage for the campus. Conduct inspections of employees periodically to ensure compliance with Campus Safety Department and college rules and regulations. Ensure that Campus Safety staff support and understand the mission of the college. Ensure all employees work together efficiently, effectively and harmoniously. Ensure all members of the department conduct themselves professionally, responsibly, ethically and with civility with other members of the department, community and with the public. When necessary, take appropriate corrective actions to address inappropriate behaviors.

Encourage staff and support their professional development. Ensure adequate staffing. Work closely with officers to ensure the proper delivery of safety services to the college community.

Sergeants must be effective team members of the department, collaborating consistently with members of the Saint Mary's community.

This position requires the ability to identify issues that may have a negative impact on the campus and report them through the chain of command.

2. Communications: Provide accurate oral and written communications, participate in meetings with officers (briefings),

interact and work with the College community and the public. Make presentations to groups. Participate in staff meetings to discuss issues, concerns and problems. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Moraga Police and fire services.

3. Administrative: Review and audit time sheets for accuracy. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of officers.

Assist with or plan and prepare work schedules including special events/activities. Supervise incidents and investigations conducted by officers. Investigate complaints regarding staff performance. Prepare and submit departmental procedures and policies for approval. Complete required reports and assignments in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner.

4. Patrol: Conduct security patrols of the College. Conduct security checks of the College's 68 plus buildings and structures. Respond to all emergencies including alarms, medical emergencies and crimes. When necessary, liaise with the Moraga Police Department for assistance.

5. Residence Life Services: frequent contact with residents at all hours of the day. Support the Resident Assistants, Residence

Directors, and Brothers in the residence halls. Assist OCL staff with escalated issues involving residents and guests.

6. Campus Services: Provide dispatcher back-up as necessary. Open and secure College buildings, classrooms, sports facilities and

other structures. Monitor, activate and deactivate College alarm systems. Provide campus escorts. Provide motor vehicle

assistance (lock-outs, jump starts, etc). Provide room lock-out service and communicate with Resident Advisors as well as Primary

On Call as much as possible.

7. Other Duties as Assigned Including representing the Department, in the absence of the Chief, at meetings, programs and

events.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: REQUIRED: High School graduation or GED PREFERRED: AA degree in

Criminal Justice/Administration of Justice, graduation from an accredited California Police Academy

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): Minimum of six months experience as a SMC

Public Safety Officer and/or 2 years of police/security work in the US Military, private industry,

municipal/state/campus law enforcement agency with at least two years in a supervisory position. Prior

supervisory experience is preferred.

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Google Docs,

MS Word, MS Excel, Web and e-mail use. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of crime

and fire prevention techniques. Safely operate motor vehicles. Ability to use a two-way radio. Physically able to

perform the duties of the job (including that of a Campus Safety Officer) which include, but not limited to:

walking, running, standing, lifting, bending, twisting, and possibly restraining individuals, if necessary.

REQUIRED: Valid California Drivers License - Class C, current and ability to be insured by SMC carriers.

CPR, AED, first aid certificates, California BSIS & Guard Card PREFERRED: P.C. 832 certificate,

POST Supervisory Certificate

Other Requirements: (e.g. travel, weekend/evening work) Wearing of a uniform is required. Work weekends,

holidays, nights, outdoors in inclement weather, overtime required and assigned. Potential for exposure to

conflict and hostility - must remain calm and maintain a professional demeanor.
