Minimum Education:

Masters Degree in Education or related field

Preferred Education:

Masters Degree or Doctorate in Special Education or related field; Special Education Director's License

Minimum Experience:

Three years of special education administrative experience, can include Director, Assistant Director, Lead Teacher, or other related administrative experience

Preferred Experience:

Director of Special Education

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized education programs (IEPs) for K-12 students at Burris Laboratory School (BLS) and Indiana Academy For Science, Mathematics and Humanities (IASMH) with identified disabilities and ensure compliance with federal, state and district requirements.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate corporation-level (BLS and IASMH) special education staff including speech pathologists, instructional assistants, school psychologist intern, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other providers as needed.
  • Attend all case conferences for students with disabilities as the District Representative.
  • Provide actionable feedback to special education teachers through classroom observations and walk-throughs and supervise Ball State University preservice teachers and graduate students in the Learning Center.
  • Evaluate District (BLS and IASMH) special education programs and monitor the implementation of special education and compliance with regulations in each location.
  • Collaborate with District school administrators and school special education teachers to implement and maintain services and/or programs including special education, English as a Second Language (ESL) and homeless or migrant students.
  • Set staffing levels for school special education programs within established budget guidelines
  • Manage fiscal resources from the general fund and special education grants, prepare budgets. Direct spending, monitor maintenance of effort, and develop annual grant requests.
  • Provide training and professional development for district faculty in accordance with Article 7, IDEA, school improvement plans and corporation plans.
  • Supervise statewide testing programs for students with disabilities to ensure appropriate accommodations are provided and the assessments are completed in accordance with state regulations.
  • Create and review special education curriculum to ensure engaging, effective lesson and unit plans are aligned to current Indiana Standards that drive instruction and include prior assessment data, objectives, allocating an instructionally appropriate amount of time, designing meaningful and relevant assignments, and assessments created before the unit for backwards planning.
  • Instruct special education students as needed and assigned. Fulfill all the job responsibilities of a special education teacher when assigned to teach students.
  • Demonstrate a high level of knowledge regarding developing special education issues, changes in the laws and case law, and educational methods of educating students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies to provide services to students and faculty.
  • Develop and/or participate in collaborative research projects with university and school faculty.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff by communicating in a professional, courteous and confidential manner and adhering to Burris Laboratory School’s social media policy.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, student achievement and developing strategies for improvement or reinforcement of classroom objectives in the home environment.
  • Prepare documentation and reports data to the Indiana Department of Education and other government entities providing written support, conveying information, and complying with Federal and State regulations.
  • Insure compliance to state and federal statues.
  • Complete and monitor state and federal reports.
  • Monitor special education teachers’ licensing.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth; attend and participate in professional development opportunities, faculty meetings, extra-curricular activities and committees.
  • Participate in professional development and meetings to gather or share information required to perform functions and improve student achievement.
  • Report incidents (e.g. suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses, etc.) to administrators to maintain the personal safety of students and provide a positive learning environment that adheres to state law and Ball State University policies.
  • Maintain a professional appearance as outlined in the Burris Laboratory School Faculty Handbook, and demonstrates behavior that is diplomatic and responsible.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
