Job Description

Summary

This is a part-time Student Intern position in the ocular surface laboratory of Dr. Stephen Pflugfelder in the ophthalmology department at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Houston, Texas. The focus of the lab is to understand how dryness and inflammation cause ocular surface disease and neural sensitization. The intern will be involved in study design and will perform hypothesis based experiments to study the mechanisms involved in causing these diseases and to identify potential therapeutic targets using a combination of animal and cell culture models. The intern will work closely with the PI to coordinate or carryout duties within the laboratory as related to research. The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to writing experimental plans, performing or assisting in experiments, learning scientific and experimental methods and writing reports and presentations. This is an excellent opportunity for a student who is pursuing a career in science and/or medicine. The position requires a minimum of 12 hours per week.

Job Purpose

Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.

Job Duties

  • Gains research experience in eye research.
  • Acquires skills in translational research and understand the basic process of drug development.
  • Trains interns for future careers as basic researchers or clinician scientists.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school or be a high school graduate (or equivalent secondary education) or enrolled in an institution of higher education.
