Summary

The Instructor - Chief  Resident serves as an educator, mentor and advocate for the residents in the program and an liaison between leaders, administrators, and residents. Instructor – Chief Resident promotes the goals of the Residency Program for designated specialty.

Job Duties

Teaching and Coaching (25%):

  • Facilitate inpatient and ambulatory morning reports for residents and students.
  • Teach in the simulation lab and mentor students.
  • Coach, counsel, and mentor individual residents .
  • Design, attend, and develop aspects of the residency curriculum.
  • Give grand rounds presentation.
  • Develop and deliver original content and curricula.
  • Orient residents and sub-Is to their services each block.

Educational Leadership (20%):

  • Participate in weekly program leadership meetings.
  • Attend Chief Resident Conference.
  • Attend “Chief Resident Development” series.
  • Plan residency-wide events.
  • Help coordinate recruitment, interact with applicants.
  • Mediate professional conflicts among residents, fellows, and faculty.
  • Coordinate and communicate residency-wide programmatic changes.

Clinical (15%):

  • Attend on teaching wards teams.
  • Moonlighting encouraged.
  • Must be “on call” for unexpected issues including after hours.

Administration (40%):

  • Create and adjust monthly block schedules.
  • Coordinate jeopardy coverage.
  • Manage day-to-day operations.
  • Coordinate fellowship interview dates, flex vacations, and coverage.
  • Coordinate sub-I team assignments and call room assignments.
  • Resolve overflow issues, resolve bed control conflicts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-terminal degree education (e.g., residency, postdoctoral training/fellowships).
  • Certifications/Registrations/Licensure required for the position.
  • Previous experience (e.g., clinical, research, teaching).
