The Glass Facilities Technician is responsible for the daily operations of the hot, warm, flame, and cold shops, as well as maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of existing equipment. This position reports directly to the director of the School of Art and will work closely with School of Art faculty and staff (i.e., Glick Center for Glass personnel and others).

Job Function:

The Glass Facilities Technician is responsible for the daily operations of the hot, warm, flame, and cold shops, as well as maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of existing equipment. This position reports directly to the director of the School of Art and will work closely with School of Art faculty and staff (i.e., Glick Center for Glass personnel and others).

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Glass, Sculpture. Studio Art, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

MFA in Glass, Sculpture, Studio Art, or a related field.

Minimum Experience:

One year of experience performing maintenance in a glass art studio, in addition to coursework for degree.

Preferred Experience:

  • Additional years of experience working in a glass art studio.
  • Experience with refractory casting and construction.
  • Experience with carpentry, metal fabrication, electrical, and/or plumbing.
  • Experience with neon equipment.
  • One semester of teaching experience at the college level.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and perform maintenance projects for the glass facility, coordinating with university facilities and maintenance staff. Coordinate with vendors who provide guidance on maintaining and repairing furnaces and other equipment or conduct site visits to work on repair projects such as: repair welder and diamond grinder, cast refractory doors, empty and recycle cullet (glass fragments), program and troubleshoot kilns and other equipment, building/repairing storage, recalibrate furnaces, maintain hoses and connections for flameworking and neon areas, etc. Work flexible hours for after-hours and weekend events. Respond to any safety issues regarding equipment after regular hours.
  • Provide regular updates, reports, and data for written reports compiled by other personnel, including on the condition of the studios, recommended equipment repairs and purchases, and equipment refresh cycles.
  • Recommend purchases of equipment and supplies for the glass facility.
  • Assign and review work, orient and train student employees who participate in the maintenence of the glass facility, and make recommendations as to performance appraisal, compensation, and discipline.
  • Work with the School of Art and College of Fine Arts on community outreach projects, which may include delivering demonstrations and workshops.
  • Conduct safety demonstrations for students and faculty.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
