Job Description

Emporia State University seeks applications or nominations for the inaugural dean of the School of Science + Mathematics. The dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the division, which includes the discipline units of Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences and directly reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.



In this pivotal role, the Dean will champion the pursuit of academic excellence and innovation across the academic units. They will foster an environment that supports a vibrant and collaborative learning community, pedagogical advancements, and scholarly research. The ideal candidate will bring a visionary approach to enhancing the school’s reputation for excellence in education, while also ensuring that the curriculum remains responsive to the evolving needs of students and the broader scientific community.



The Dean will work closely with unit leadership and faculty to develop a comprehensive strategic vision for the reorganized school, deepen the school’s community engagement, and advance initiatives to engage and recruit students, including both majors and non-majors, to the University, units, and to the school’s academic programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as the chief academic and administrative leader of the School of Science + Mathematics, overseeing personnel supervision and annual evaluations, and leading faculty recruitment, promotion, and tenure processes.
Strategically plans and ensures the overall effective operation of all units within the School of Science + Mathematics.
Maintains fiscal responsibility for all personnel and operating budgets with the School of Science + Mathematics.
Provides leadership in the development and maintenance of academic excellence in all disciplines through all program delivery systems.
Effectively represents and promotes the School of Science + Mathematics, building strong relationships within the university and with external constituents (including external partners and community organizations).
Provides support and leadership for accreditation reviews within academic programs.
Pursues active membership on state and national professional committees which promote visibility for the School of Science + Mathematics and Emporia State University.
Implements University, State, and Board of Regents policies.
Participates in fundraising initiatives that impact the School and University in collaboration with personnel from the ESU Foundation.
Ensures an effective student learning outcomes assessment plan is annually implemented, reviewed, and revised (as appropriate) for each academic program offered within the School of Science + Mathematics.
Supports campus and the School of Science + Mathematics outreach programs to attract a diverse student body and increase student enrollment and retention.
Monitors the physical facilities within the School of Science + Mathematics to ensure they are appropriately maintained and state-of-the-art.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

Earned a doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a science or mathematics field.
A proven track record of increasing enrollment in STEM disciplines.
Record as an accomplished academic administrator.
Demonstrated record in teaching, service, and research/creative activity at the level of Associate Professor or above.
Experience with shared governance in academics, budgeting, and personnel issues.
Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with faculty, students, alumni, and administrators.
Evidence of excellent human relations and communication skills.


Preferred:

Minimum of three years’ experience as dean, associate dean, department chair, or equivalent administrative roles.
Possesses knowledge and experience in regional, university, and programmatic accreditation, including compliance with accrediting agency regulations and preparing self-study reports for accreditation or reaccreditation.
Experience with building partnerships between academic programs and external entities.
Extensive experience in fundraising and managing donor and alumni relations, with a successful history of securing donations to support both existing programs and new initiatives.
COMPENSATION:
Salary: $102,000 - $154,000 annually.
Qualifications and previous experience will be considered for placement of base rank and salary.
