Job Description

This position will provide research and technical analysis relating to nuclear safety and security for a growing program in nuclear incident response planning and operations for foreign nuclear reactors. This position will serve as a focal point for interdependency studies for energy security and nuclear safety, reflecting the new reality of wars and armed conflict impacting energy infrastructure and nuclear power plants. The ideal candidate will have a research background in energy security or nuclear safety, with the ability to expand their research focus to the complementary area.

The position will work in an applied setting, working closely with responders in the Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) and the National Nuclear Security Administration Ukraine Task Force to understand current research gaps and prioritize analysis of ongoing and postulated events.

The position will also work to develop training materials and related training aids/key leader engagement tools to aid in future nuclear incident response scoping and planning activities, helping to shape the future of NEST training for foreign nuclear reactor emergencies.

The position consists of mostly office work including modeling and simulation tasks, technical analysis, and writing. Domestic travel to Washington D.C. and other national laboratories is possible.

Position Requirements

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in nuclear engineering or energy science, or a related field at the PhD level with zero to five years of employment experience.

  • Demonstrated research skills applying nuclear safety to broader energy science topics or applying energy science to specific generation capabilities.

  • Experience developing training curriculum and materials.

  • Organizational and time management skills.

  • Public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Skills in PC-based computer systems using word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and other typical office software applications.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience in emergency preparedness/incident response, including outside nuclear (e.g., emergency medical services, fire/rescue, search and rescue, etc.)

To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship and will be required to obtain and maintain Q and SCI clearances, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
