Job Description

Job Responsibilities:
Understand data requirements and create / manage an efficient database structure that meets present and future needs.

Create data models that define the structure of the database, including tables, relationships, and constraints.

Manage and support integrations to other databases and applications.
Author and review functional design documents used to communicate business requirements to the technology development team.

Build, execute, and support comprehensive test plans.
Create and maintain documentation for database structures, configurations, and procedures.
Collaborate with other IT professionals, including system administrators, network administrators, and application developers to ensure a smooth and integrated IT environment.

Proactively develop relationships and partner with internal stakeholders - scientists, laboratory technicians, veterinarians, administrative staff, and accounting staff.
Collaborate with external partners to meet their reporting requirements, develop system messages, and interface with lab equipment.

Ensure data integrity in alignment with required database constraints and logic.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS plus at least two years of work experience in the areas of database design and administration, or master's degree.
Experience with data warehousing and manipulation/ETL including PostgreSQL, MS SQL, and/or MySQL.
Proficiency in conducting analysis of business processes and recommending improvements or efficiencies. Excellent communication skills with the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to write and maintain large SQL packages.
Experience with database-related Linux administration
Experience with application integration, including third party systems.
Experience with integration and reporting tools. Examples include Tableau, XML, SQL, DB2 databases, and familiarity with legacy programming languages.
Experience with implementation tools and methodologies. Examples include Agile, prototyping versus formal systems analysis and design, entity relationship diagrams, process flows, and data flows.

About the Department
The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is a national leader in providing rapid diagnosis of animal diseases, identifying emerging diseases, developing new diagnostic methods, and training diagnosticians and veterinarians. The VDL serves the interests of the livestock and poultry industry, animal research scientists and educators, and companion animal owners and provides support to the state as the official laboratory of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health as well as supporting national animal and human health systems. The laboratory is a part of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and serves as Minnesota’s only full service laboratory for animal health diagnostics and surveillance.
