Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a Master’s degree
5 years professional experience in Housing or Residence Life
Experience supervising and training undergraduate staff, program development and implementation, crisis intervention, and student counseling or advisement
Excellent communication skills including excellent writing skills as demonstrated in the application materials
License/Certification Required
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s and/or doctorate degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education, or related field
Experience supervising graduate and full-time staff
Demonstrated professional involvement

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision
Supervise 2-3 Master’s Level Professional Coordinators
Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings with staff members
Work to create an environment of mutual support and encouragement of teamwork
Complete formal evaluations of staff members and provide ongoing feedback
Provide biweekly training or development for Coordinators
Oversee management of programming and staff development budgets.
Work closely with Student Leadership (Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, and Leadership Development Initiatives) and Training (Professional Staff, Graduate staff and RA Staff training .

Administration
Co-chair Training and Development Committee
Discuss, implement, and evaluate policy-making decisions affecting Residence Life
Provide input and assist in the preparation of the Residence Life budget
Meet weekly with Associate Director of University Housing for Residence Life
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with other departments and offices
Coordinate staff manual revisions and oversee the dissemination of policy and protocol updates and changes
Serve on committees, task forces, and search committees as requested or approved by supervisor
Serve on at least one non-UH committee in Student or Academic Affairs
Perform administrative tasks as delegated by the Senior Associate Director of University Housing for Residence Life (i.e. coordination of RA break duty, facilitation of all Residence Life meetings, etc.)

Case & Crisis Management
Clearly communicate, interpret, and enforce department and university policies to staff and students
Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavior issues and concerns
Review all incident reports and documentations and consult with the Office of the Dean of Students as needed
Consult on educational interventions to minimize behavioral issues within the community
Supervise the case management responsibility for Coordinators, including follow-up and referrals in consultation with the Office of the Dean of Students Adjudicate student conduct cases as needed
Serve as a resource and referral for students of concern
Provide leadership during crises in the residence hall and in the greater campus community
Guide staff through successful implementation of the Residence Life and Appalachian State crisis protocol

Community Development
Be accessible, visible, and present during all check-in and check-out dates
Make efforts to get to know residents, students, and staff, maintaining a level of visibility with each group
Promote student involvement in residence hall activities, hall governance, and general co-curricular campus life
Attend staff-planned community development activities and educational events
Promote recognition and appreciation of students and staff
Create the vision and goals for the side of campus in which they oversee

Inclusivity
Develop departmental expectations, policies, procedures, and resources to support the development of an inclusive community
Hold self, students, and staff members accountable to departmental, divisional, and university expectations regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion
Challenge colleagues and staff to recognize their biases and grow in their understanding of themselves
Develop and utilize skills to work with diverse student and staff populations
Maintain sensitivity to different perspectives and identities
Address all incidents of bias
Learn ways to advocate for the needs of all staff and students

Staff Employment
Assist the Assistant Director for Recruitment, Selection, and Training with oversight of hiring, onboarding, and corrective coaching of full-time and part-time staff members including students
Train supervisors in techniques and methods for instituting on-going constructive and evaluation of staff
Conduct periodic evaluations of job descriptions, staff remuneration, and staffing structure

Liaison Relationships
Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with campus partners
Attend one Residence Hall Association and Resident Assistant Council meeting a semester
Work closely with University Housing – Student and Administrative Services staff regarding room changes, consolidations, occupancy reports, withdrawals, etc.
Work closely with University Housing – Facilities Staff regarding maintenance and housekeeping concerns
Serve as liaison to parents for area of responsibility
