College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.

Job Summary

The Senior Research Associate will work independently under the direction of the PI and will be expected to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of molecular and clinical genetics, stem cells, hepatobiliary cancer, hepatitis B virus, including engaging in collaborative projects. This position will help train and provide supervision to the postdocs, students and technical staff and will carry out research projects independently; design and execute research experiments, perform data analysis, write manuscripts, and publish results. The Senior Research Associate will partner with the Pl on intramural and extramural grant applications. Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Independently design, plan, conduct and execute highly specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols and procedures and in some cases designing new protocols, analyzing, critically review resulting data and documenting resulting data, developing manuscripts and grant proposals, and presenting findings in a clear and concise manner will be among the principle responsibilities of this position.
  • Project planning and associated documentation.
  • Research new methods and may directly supervise the work of others in the group and/or across interdisciplinary teams. Supervise other personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; participate in training of fellows, residents, students, and volunteer workers as needed.
  • Will work with Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) materials, chemical reagents, and organisms such as viruses, bacteria and/or human clinical matrices (e.g. serum and plasma).
  • Will work with non-human primates such as mice and rats.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and two years of experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory, particularly clinical trial research.

OR

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned with a minimum of five years research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience

Experience in a wide-variety of molecular biology, and biochemical methods for nucleic acid, protein analysis and manipulation.

Experience in analytical methods and detailed quantitative analysis for characterization of nucleic acids and proteins including but not limited to proteomics, metabolomics

Experience in cell biology, tissue culture, primary cell isolation and culture, stem cells and handling of viruses

Experience in working with non-human primates such as mice and rats

Experience in gene editing, genetic engineering, and molecular cloning methods, including but not limited to CRISPR/Cas9 / viral/non-viral vector based transfection/transduction systems.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, design experiments, analyze resulting data, document results, generate hypotheses for manuscripts and grants, write and develop manuscripts and grant proposals

Strong scientific fundamentals and analytical background

Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute project planning, organization, troubleshooting, optimization and validation of experiments

A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected including the ability to multi-task in an environment with changing priorities

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases

Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills

Shift/Salary/Benefits



Pay Grade: R15

Salary: $38,913 - $53,206

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
